Veteran Leadership in Data Science: Applying Lessons from the U.S. Navy to Drive Effective Problem-Solving

By Brent Sitterly, Chief Data Scientist + CEO | Fixed Point Analytics M.S. Mathematics (Stochastic Modeling)| U.S. Navy Veteran

The principles of effective problem-solving transcend disciplines, whether applied to high-stakes military operations or the intricate challenges of data science. Stationed at Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY), a critical hub for U.S. military strategy in the Pacific, the U.S.S. Blue Ridge served as both a command center and a proving ground for decision-making under uncertainty. These experiences shaped a mindset that balances precision, adaptability, and strategic vision—qualities I now bring to the day-to-day operations of running a small business focused on data science and analytics.

As I head into 2025, these principles continue to guide my work. This year, I am diving into several exciting initiatives, including building custom data products, supporting a company in integrating and optimizing their tech stack, advancing modeling techniques for the energy industry, and developing machine learning code to drive innovation and insights. These projects require not only technical expertise but also the leadership and adaptability honed through years of managing complex systems and operations.

The Power of Systems Thinking

In environments like in the middle of the Pacific ocean working with the entire Seventh Fleet, where the interconnectedness of operations was critical, systems thinking was not optional—it was essential. Managing network administration shops, including overseeing all communications—both classified and unclassified—to support intelligence operations and day-to-day fleet readiness required anticipating how changes in one component could ripple across a complex system. This same systems-level perspective informs every project I undertake in data science, where robust solutions depend on understanding how data sources, analytical tools, and outputs interact.

For businesses, this approach means fewer blind spots and greater resilience. Whether optimizing workflows, streamlining operations, or building predictive models, systems thinking ensures that solutions are not just effective but enduring.

Precision and Adaptability: Hallmarks of Leadership

Leadership aboard the U.S.S. Blue Ridge demanded unwavering precision. Mistakes weren’t just costly; they could compromise critical missions. This emphasis on getting it right the first time now informs how I manage client projects, ensuring that every deliverable is accurate and actionable.

Adaptability was equally vital in the dynamic environment found on board a Navy ship, where shifting priorities and unexpected challenges required a constant readiness to pivot. Today, this adaptability enables my team to stay ahead of rapidly evolving technologies and client needs. Whether leveraging Python, R, or Power BI, being platform-agnostic allows us to craft tailored solutions that address specific business challenges without being constrained by toolsets.

Data-Driven Decision-Making with Military Precision

One of the most valuable lessons from my time in the Navy was the ability to make decisions under uncertainty. Stochastic and Bayesian modeling, which I studied during my master’s program in mathematics, reinforce this skill by providing frameworks for navigating variability and incomplete information. These methods aren’t just academic concepts; they’re practical tools for transforming uncertainty into actionable insights.

For example, stochastic modeling helps evaluate potential outcomes by accounting for random variation, offering businesses a clearer picture of risks and opportunities. Bayesian principles, such as incorporating prior knowledge and balancing probabilities, ensure flexibility and precision when data is incomplete. This approach mirrors the decision-making processes used aboard the Blue Ridge, where incomplete intelligence had to be translated into effective action.

Why Businesses Should Hire Veteran-Owned Companies

Veteran-owned businesses, like the one I lead, deliver a unique combination of strategic thinking, operational excellence, and resilience—qualities honed in environments where stakes are high and margins for error are low. Beyond supporting an individual veteran, partnering with veteran-owned businesses creates opportunities for other veterans to leverage their leadership skills and technical expertise in meaningful ways.

My experience overseeing all communications for network administration shops, including managing secure systems critical to the intelligence community, reflects the level of responsibility and precision that veterans bring to the private sector. These are not theoretical skills; they’re combat ready capabilities that translate directly into solving complex business challenges.

Veteran-owned businesses amplify these strengths by building teams of like-minded professionals who thrive under pressure, think strategically, and execute flawlessly. For companies in energy, marketing, or sustainability, partnering with a veteran-owned business is not just an investment in expertise but a commitment to operational excellence and long-term impact.

Honoring the Mission

The Navy instilled in me a commitment to excellence, resilience, and purpose—values that continue to guide how I run my business and serve my clients. Whether optimizing marketing campaigns, advancing clean energy solutions, driving smarter decision-making in finance, or tackling the complexities of tech stack integration and advanced modeling, the lessons I learned in Japan with the US Navy and the analytical frameworks I’ve mastered in graduate school ensure meaningful impact.

Partnering with a veteran-owned business isn’t just about supporting those who served; it’s about leveraging proven leadership and expertise to solve today’s most complex challenges. For organizations seeking a partner who combines technical acumen with mission-driven focus, I’d love to connect. Together, we can turn your data into actionable results that drive success.

Veteran insights enhance resilience and innovation in business. Excited to see your journey unfold!
