As we celebrate Vesak Day 2023, take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary event that took place over 2,500 years ago.
In the vast landscape of human history, few moments stand out as profoundly transformative as the Buddha's pivotal breakthrough in concentration. This moment continues to touch and impact millions across this planet.
This singular moment, which occurred as a young mendicant sat meditating beneath the ancient, famed Bodhi tree in India, marked the birth of one of the world's most enduring, powerful and radical spiritual teachings.
Here’s how the Buddha repeatedly described this moment in the Gotamasutta, Gotama (Samyutta Nikaya, Linked Discourses 12.10):
Tassa mayha?, bhikkhave, yonisomanasikārā ahu pa??āya abhisamayo
Then, mendicants, through sustained focus, there was for me a breakthrough in understanding clearly.
To truly realise the immensity, splendour and majesty of this realisation, we must first recognise the years of tireless application - searching, experimentation, and self-discipline - that led to it.
Siddhartha Gautama -- who would become the Buddha -- embarked on an arduous journey of self-discovery, relentlessly exploring the depths of human experience. He encountered and studied with renowned spiritual teachers, immersed himself in various practices, and subjected his body to extreme austerities, all in pursuit of finding sustainable peace.
In the face of immense challenges, Siddhartha Gautama remained steadfast and resolute in his quest for understanding. He sought a path that transcended pain, distress, challenges and impermanence that characterised the human condition.

At last, the moment arrived when the Buddha, embraced a sustainable approach to mental health and well-being.
The Buddha's realization underscored the critical importance of sustained focus in achieving profound insight and clarity. He made this process available for all of humankind, irrespective of caste, race, creed or background.
In our present age, the Buddha's teachings on sustained focus are more relevant than ever. Our lives are inundated with a plethora of distractions, as technology, social media, and the rapid pace of modern living threaten to fragment our attention.
Yet, as the Buddha's experience illustrates, the ability to concentrate on a single factor, task or goal is vital for success, self-awareness, and spiritual growth.
Sustained focus is not simply a matter of willpower or determination; it is a skill that can be cultivated and polished through practice. It requires us to be mindful of our thoughts and emotions, to recognise when our attention wavers, and to gently guide it back to the task at hand.
By developing sustained focus, we strengthen our mental discipline, enabling us to better navigate the challenges and complexities of contemporary life.
In today's fast-paced world, where distractions abound, and our attention spans are often stretched thin. By practicing sustained focus, we can cultivate the mental discipline needed to achieve our goals and navigate the challenges of modern life.
So, we pay profound gratitude and homage to the Buddha.
In the spirit of Vesak, let us take inspiration from the Buddha's teachings and strive to develop sustained focus in our daily lives. As we navigate the challenges of our time, may we draw strength from the wisdom and compassion that lie at the heart of the Buddha's message, fostering peace and understanding in our world.
Wishing you all a very beneficial and fruitful Vesak 2023.
