It is very difficult to reskill. Is there a shortcut?

Another weekend and another simplification. This week I have tried to simplify a big question that non- technical professionals have. John Doe DM exclaimed one fine day to me that you write about reskilling, but it is very difficult to acquire technical skills. Is there a shortcut for learning the technical skills?

My simple answer to this question was, “Is it really required for the non-technical professional to acquire technical skills?”

Let us see a quick SWOT for Non-technical professionals;

Photo shows the Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats to data management activities.

From the SWOT analysis above, a non-technical professional’s USP seems to be the Domain Knowledge and Subject matter expertise.

I would advise non-technical professionals to really think hard before proceeding for acquiring programming skills and spending time and money on it or to focus on the opportunities and spend time and money there.

If John Doe D.M. chooses working on the opportunities at hand i.e. becoming a consultant, learning a new domain, then it will help overcome some of the threats automatically. Becoming a consultant, learning a new domain is not easy. One has to deeply understand the subject, problems and probable solutions before becoming a one. However you see there is no need to become an expert in coding/programming.

To conclude, the John Doe DM, should focus on the USP i.e. the domain knowledge and subject mater expertise. John must start getting better at identifying reskilling opportunities for self.

For all the “Mr. Doe” out there, make sure to become “Mr. Does”. Do work on reskilling, but make sure unless you are truly looking to be a technical professional, ?I suggest to look at the opportunities to grow and not really be worried about the weaknesses unless there are some obvious ones that need to be worked on to convert to strengths.

So, to conclude,

·????????For Non-Technical professionals, I would urge them to think of the strengths and become stronger.

·????????Non-Technical roles can learn the steps of requirement gathering, translating the business requirements to technical problems etc. which is still a technical work.

·????????Last but not the least, please do not look of SHORTCUTS for success!
