The Versatility of a Coaching Hat

The Versatility of a Coaching Hat

It was but a germ of an idea at the onset of the pandemic. Locked down (and herself) quarantined, Carla V. Manas, the Center for Executive Coaching’s Senior Faculty, envisioned teaching coaches in the APAC region to be trailblazers and catalysts for positive change.

A year and four successful training programs later, we catch up with the graduates to ask where a CEC training has taken them.

Since transitioning from Art Entrepreneurship to Career and Leadership Coaching, Nikka Santos is making strides with her self-designed program, Future Leaders. A successful maiden run led to a clamor of requests and the need to run the program 3X a year for the first school tapped. She coaches self-leadership in Gen Z students and millennial professionals entering the workplace, developing their capacity to find the path meant for them. Nikka calls this capacity the value of Agency.

“We set so many expectations for our young, talented people that they grapple at where to take themselves. I coach them to pay attention to their inner voice; feel their own power and make a stand for what they want, even as they listen to external factors.”

Her mission comes from a personal space. Growing up, she did as was expected and told. “It burned me out. It didn’t have to be that way.? I’m a Coach because I want to be the adult I wish I had around when I was a young leader.”

A CEC Certification is opening up prospects for Nikka and Future Leaders. Brimming excitement, she runs down her possibilities for 2022 – a 360 learning and teaching opportunity for a management consultancy firm; coaching young journalists for a news organization; spinning-off Future Leaders to institutionalize a coach parenting approach; reaching more schools with her program continuous learning from CEC’s progressive format (She still hops back on current classes.). A full plate for someone who started coaching a few months back. Yet, she’s confident, armed with a solid foundation for what she is doing.

Jerome Tuason has been juggling different hats prior to coaching -? professional selling, motivational speaking, corporate training, and mentoring. When he finally decided to sign up for CEC’s program, it was more than what he bargained for.

“I struggled! It conflicted me. Being a trainer, speaker and mentor is so different from coaching. I was all about delivering my ideas, experiences, and what I’m currently doing.”.? Unlearn to learn he did, making that awkward shift from telling clients what to do to allowing realizations from what they have and already know. “The knowledge from CEC is so revolutionary, it really supports and applies to my actual practice.”.

Adding Executive Coaching to an arsenal of skills is akin to finding the missing link that enables him to broaden his practice. Adeptly, he is now able to switch skills from teaching, mentoring to coaching, as necessary. Energizing and intense is how Jerome describes his practice, knowing he delivers twice the value through the complimentary use of multiple disciplines. There’s nothing like someone coming to you and saying how much an impact you’ve made.’

CEC’s training taught Jerome to push past his comfort zone. Shy about using social media, he forced himself to emerge from his shell and meet the marketing challenge of his trainer, Carla. This was crucial in closing a one-year engagement for 12 executives as a Performance Coach for Emerging Leaders. The deal covered the cost of his investment. “The tools and training are amazing! I’ve leveled up professionally and in the way, I deliver my engagements.” Constant learning and integrating new ideas with his CEC foundation, to create more program offers and talks on the coaching difference, are plans for 2022.

Jerome thought Executive Coaching was going to be just another skill one acquires for people development. He ends up uncovering more than what he knows himself to be.
