Verizon issues third $1 billion green bond

Exciting green bond news! Today Verizon, a leading corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S., formally announced the issuance of its third $1 billion green bond. This news quickly followed the full allocation of its second green bond which was focused exclusively on renewable energy investments. The net proceeds of the company’s third green bond are also expected to be allocated entirely toward renewable energy, primarily long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) supporting the construction of new solar and wind power facilities.

Verizon’s renewable energy investments are consistent with its support of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its public goals including sourcing or generating renewable energy equivalent to 50% of its total annual electricity consumption by 2025 and to be net-zero in its operational emissions by 2035 (scope 1 and 2 emissions).

Immediately prior to the issuance of the latest green bond, Verizon released an updated green financing framework which includes new green bond underwriter selection criteria focused on sustainability and diversity commitments.
