Are You a "Purple Prose" Professional?

Are You a "Purple Prose" Professional?

What do I mean by that? Too many words (qualifiers) without enough information.

The definition of purple prose : "Purple prose is a style of writing characterized by overly flowery language that tends to draw attention to itself, and away from the story being told. Its typical features include excessive adjectives, exaggerated metaphors , multisyllabic words, long sentences, and elaborate descriptions of a character’s <job seeker's> inner thoughts and feelings."?

This is the very OPPOSITE of what you need to be doing for your resume. Y’all: you need to EDIT. Heavily. Overuse of qualifiers can come across as both pompous and a poor, unsophisticated communicator. You need to SHOW, not TELL your reader about how your background makes you the best person for the job.

When I talk about qualifiers, I mean adjectives and adverbs to describe how you are managing your work.

Here is a list of the biggest offenders:

  • Efficiently
  • Actively
  • Quickly
  • Confidently
  • Independently
  • Accurately
  • Creatively
  • Effectively
  • Reliably
  • Meticulously
  • Diligently
  • Conscientiously
  • Thoroughly
  • Helpfully
  • Supportively
  • Enthusiastically
  • Proficiently
  • Resourcefully
  • Seamlessly
  • Capable
  • Compassionate
  • Compelling
  • Detail-oriented
  • Dynamic
  • Efficient
  • Fast-learning
  • Organized?

?Use with restraint and in conjunction with DETAILED examples:

  • Significantly (this one should have some sort of metric - either a $ or a % change)

Significantly decreased testing times by 35% by implementing X

  • Successfully (you want to make sure you use this directly in relation to a demanding project)

Successfully managed an international software implementation with no downtime, completed training for 500 employees in 5 countries in under 4 months

Less is more on your resume, and verbosity translates to poor communication style. (Look up the term "purple prose" for more information).

This isn't JUST for ChatGPT generated resumes, BTW. It applies to writing resumes and cover letters in general.

One should be able to realize that their AI generated resume looks too 'generated'. AI is there to be a tool, not a silver bullet. To your point of 'less is more', irrespective of AI, due to the "ctrl-F" nature of recruiting that I have experienced, ensuring you have enough keywords on your resume, well, sucks. You have to write the resume you need, not the resume you want.
