In a newsletter I received today, I got this list of definitiona about different kinds of transciptions. I know each has a purpose. Is this the way we will label transcripts in the future? Comments?
Verbatim transcription is word-for-word documentation of exactly what was spoken, including false starts, unfinished sentences, misspoken words/statements, repetition, and “ahs” and “ums”.
Semi-verbatim is close to verbatim transcription but cleaned up to eliminate “ahs” and “ums”. It does not correct misspoken words or grammatical errors.
Intelligent verbatim preserves the speaker’s sentence structure, phrasing, point of view, and message but cleans up the presentation, corrects grammatical errors and misspoken words, and eliminates repetition and extraneous words such as “ahs” and “ums”.
