Teaching Ethical Manufacturing to Student Entrepreneurs in a World of Fast Fashion

?

Recently, Mateo Neri and his students from the ArtCenter College of Design visited D&D Leather Goods in downtown Los Angeles, California, to learn about the full lifecycle of their high-quality goods. Neri received a faculty grant from VentureWell in 2020 to support the development of his MADEinLA course, which serves as a real-world introduction to the manufacturing process and offers students an opportunity to collaborate with local factories to bring their own product designs to life. Since taking the course, students have designed products such as shoes made from upcycled leather-car-seat upholstery, a surfboard bag made in part from fabric fashioned from recycled water bottles, and a couch made from deadstock airbag fabric. Neri offered four proven recommendations for sustainable design educators interested in replicating his idea.

A Quick How-To Guide for Introducing Student Teams to Non-Dilutive Funding

?

Many student teams can benefit from non-dilutive funding; they just don’t always know it. Federal funding is an excellent way to prove out that technology, achieve key milestones, and de-risk the opportunity. As a former student innovator, VentureWell Director of National Venture Programs Tricia Compas-Markman has firsthand experience navigating the challenging process of pursuing grants, and she provided a checklist for student innovators looking to explore non-dilutive funding.
