Recently, many of the founders we work with at

have been asking me for tips and tricks on building community through online thought leadership.
In today's digital landscape, especially with the power and reach of Linkedin, VCs, and founders have a unique opportunity to establish themselves as thought leaders within their industry. By sharing valuable, authentic and valuable content, thought leaders can cultivate an engaged following, build trust, and ultimately influence their community.
I started building my community of engineers, scientists, and founders on Linkedin in 2018 while still employed at Apple. I was looking for ways to expand my network and quickly realized that by posting fun and quirky engineering content I was able to connect with creative and interesting people around the world.
In this article, we'll explore the importance of becoming an online thought leader, the types of posts and articles that resonate, and how to seamlessly incorporate content related to your product without appearing overly commercial or spammy.
Why Thought Leadership Matters for Entrepreneurs (VCs and Founders)
- Establishes credibility: As an entrepreneur, your online presence serves as a reflection of your expertise and trustworthiness. By sharing insightful content, you demonstrate your knowledge in your field, establishing credibility with potential customers, investors, and partners.
- Builds brand awareness: Thought leadership allows you to showcase your unique perspective and expertise, creating both a strong brand identity. This visibility not only helps attract customers but also differentiates you from competitors. I am a strong believer that a personal brand is just as important as a business brand.
- Expands your network: Sharing valuable content creates opportunities for collaboration, partnerships, and increased exposure. As your online presence grows, so does your ability to connect with industry influencers and potential customers.
- Attracts investment: Demonstrating your expertise and staying current with industry trends enhances your attractiveness to potential investors, who are more likely to commit resources to a well-informed, industry-savvy founder.
Types of Posts and Articles That Resonate
- Short infotainment content: Don't underestimate the importance and value of entertainment. Even on Linkedin, most people are here to be entertained. However, this should only be part of your strategy as it is difficult to show the true depth of knowledge or thought with short content.
- Educational content: Share in-depth articles, guides, or tutorials that address common pain points and challenges faced by your target audience. This showcases your understanding of their needs and positions you as a reliable source of information.
- Opinion pieces: Thought-provoking opinion pieces allow you to engage in industry conversations and share your unique perspective. Be respectful and open-minded, but don't shy away from expressing your viewpoint.
- Case studies and success stories: Share real-life examples that illustrate the effectiveness of your product or service. These stories help readers envision the benefits of working with you while providing tangible evidence of your expertise.
- Industry news and trends: Stay updated on industry developments and contribute your insights on the implications of new trends, technologies, or policies. This not only showcases your thought leadership but also helps your audience stay informed.
Balance your Product Promotion with Authentic Content
- Solve problems first: Focus on addressing your audience's needs before promoting your product or service. Share content that offers genuine solutions to their challenges, and then subtly highlight how your product or service can help.
- Be transparent: Clearly disclose your affiliation with your product or service. Being upfront about your connection fosters trust and credibility with your audience.
- Integrate testimonials: Feature customer stories that demonstrate the value of your product or service. These endorsements not only showcase your offering but also provide social proof.
- Leverage partnerships: Collaborate with influencers or complementary businesses to create co-branded content that combines your expertise. This approach exposes your product to a broader audience while maintaining a focus on providing valuable information.
Becoming an online thought leader is an essential aspect of the entrepreneurship journey in the digital age. By sharing authentic, valuable content, you can establish credibility, grow brand awareness, and foster meaningful connections with your target audience. By balancing educational content with subtle promotion, you can seamlessly integrate your product or service into your thought leadership strategy without appearing overly commercial or spammy. Embrace your unique perspective and expertise to make a lasting impact in your industry.
