#Ventilator Development Update#1

The thing that was done before starting to work on initial schematics, was to talk with Intensivists and I’m thankful to my #Surgeon friends for putting us through to them. Understanding requirements, criticality of parameters, ease of use requirements turned out to be critical. We had to dump the initial schematics with used the resuscitator bags as primary source of pumping air in to lungs. Drawback being,

1.      Non-linear volume displacement, making it hard to adjust Tidal volume or even to provide a calibrated scale for intensivist to adjust volume.

2.      Un-controlled mixing of oxygen, increasing chances occurrence of hordes of problems with health of the patient.

3.      Dependence on electricity and the failures which come along with it.

4.      With electricity comes the need for power back-up!

But, there was one specific advantage too, an In-built high pressure venting valve.

After almost 15 iterations in design with respect to availability of components, ease of logistics. A circuit working with pressure of Oxygen and zero electronic components is finalized and being assembled. Advantages:

1.      Doesn’t require electricity, so can work in #Rural Health centres, #Ambulances and practically anywhere. All it would need would be an Oxygen cylinder.

2.      Oxygen and Air Mixture can be precisely controlled.

3.      Breaths per minute can be controlled with infinite variations.

4.      PEEP adjustment to make sure that, lungs retain positive pressure after exhalation and are receptive to absorbing maximum oxygen.

 Let’s hope the trials go smoothly today. I’m thankful to DY Patil hospital & respected Mr for providing dummy body for these trials. Will keep you posted.
