Velvet Monkeys, Kidepo, Uganda
This is one of my favorite wildlife photographs in the world. It is absolutely breathtaking. Here is the full picture for reference:
Something about the blend of the colors, the cute little velvet monkey clinging to its mother, who is gazing into yonder is phenomenal. These monkeys are often found dashing through the savannah grasslands or running up a tree. They belong here, don't they? Even their coats carry the colors of their habitat.
Velvet monkeys will stop you in your tracks. Your gaze will be fixed on them, observing them. I often think about how we must appear to other living creatures as humans. How do we look at them as we stand there observing them? Do they wonder what these two-legged creatures are up to? Or are we so insignificant they dismiss us as the animals who are often lost in the wilderness?
Well, we will never know. I honestly hope we don't ever evolve to the point of learning animal thoughts. I read somewhere that some species of apes can understand us but have no questions for us. My theory of us being uninteresting might hold after all.
Away from that for now, let's admire this picture. Stunning seems like a lacking word.
