Welcome to the October edition of Industry Insights by The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark. It’s been a busy month for the Vegan Trademark team, from becoming a patron to the British Beauty Council to getting out and meeting members of our inspiring community at the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit in Paris, British Beauty Week in London and One Planet Pizza’s launch party in the capital.

The EU Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that plant-based products can continue to use meat-related terms like "burger" and "sausage"

This landmark decision overturns a 2021 French law that aimed to restrict such terminology, marking a huge win for the industry!

The ruling underscores that vegan alternatives deserve the same marketing opportunities as traditional products, reflecting the growing demand for sustainable and ethical food choices across Europe.

As consumer preferences shift towards vegan diets, this ruling sends a clear message: vegan foods have the right to compete on an even playing field using terms consumers understand.

Are you ready for Veganuary 2025?

Where does the time go? As we approach the end of the year now is the time to think about one of the most important moments in the retail calendar – Veganuary!

Veganuary recently polled people who took part in their 31-day support programme and the results are hard to ignore:

  • 81%?of participants have significantly reduced their animal product consumption.
  • 27%?are sticking with a fully vegan diet.
  • 37%?are eating at least 75% less meat and other animal products than before.
  • And 95% of those who aren’t fully vegan say they’re likely to give it another go!

What does this mean for your business? The Veganuary campaign is an important and highly relevant moment in the retail calendar - and people are making long-term lifestyle changes because of it. Brand loyalty can start during January and last a lifetime!
