Top Gun - A Cult Classic that celebrates Teamwork
There are many reasons why ‘Top Gun’ is a cult classic. The aerial shots, the intensive combat sequences which were never seen before, the cultural impact that it had on the audience that there was a boom in US military enlistments post its release, the list just keeps going. But today let’s discuss one of the inherent features that make it this unique - teamwork.
In the very first scene, when one of the hostile MiG-28s missile locked on Cougar, Maverick came to the rescue by ambushing that missile with great difficulty. Any operation that took place in this movie, besides the ones in training, was done in teams. Be it the first sequence of the movie, or the climax where it was just Maverick and Goose versus 6 MiGs. They worked on instinct, communication, and most importantly, unmeasurable trust in their teammates to have their backs. And that is our takeaway from this issue.
Working in a team not only gives us more hands on deck, but also gives us a lot more ideas and opinions that would sharpen our decision-making. You have a better grip on the situation and are able to take measured decisions even in times of crisis. In any team, everyone is unique. They would have had different experiences, different skill sets, and different thought processes that set them apart from the others. Embracing these differences is a win-win for all of us, as we stand to gain from each other’s experiences.
Just like how the pilots depended on their RIOs and their teammates even in life-and-death situations, no matter how difficult a scenario is, it can be made easier with a team working together.
