VE Day

VE Day

Hip, Hip, Hooray, it’s VE Day

A memory for me, but to my dismay

That so many people had to die

And few believe the reason why.

Battles are fought, won and lost

But to us humans, at what cost?

It seems to me that we could all learn

That life’s not about just what we earn.

To all those folk who are lonely today

Remember the people who went to the fray

Remember their wives, mums and dads, children to

Who stayed at home to see this thing through?

Words alone cannot fully express

Our thoughts at this time, but let me press

The “Thank you all” button in my focused brain

That says “it’s all over, never again”.

The battles of today are very different, so

Let’s give thanks for those that we know

The nurses, the doctors and oh so many more,

Who are now fighting a different war.

And what of those people who in a prison reside,

Should we not help them their fears to subside?

For even in there the battles are fought,

And health is the same, it’s not simply bought.

Lockdown, separation, restrictions aplenty,

The results, well I’m sure the Judge had plenty

Of choice on the sentence but did not intend

That death would result, to many, the end.

So VE Day inside is sure to be attended

By those who sometimes feel absolutely offended

And this is not the way their lives should be ended

Compassion please Mr. Politician, then you will be befriended.
