Variations on a Theme

Variations on a Theme

The ability to improvise on a theme has always been a highly valued for musicians. They were often challenged by the audience, who proposed any theme. The musical form of variations on a theme is also used in written and published music. 12 Variations on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman", K. 265 / 300e, by Mozart (1756-1791), was composed when he was about 25 years. This French melody appeared for the first time in 1761, known today as a children's song, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". The piece was published in Vienna, 1785.
