The invention relates to a variable microscope system that, starting from the object plane, a main lens, a zoom lens consisting of a plurality of lens groups and the zoom lens system comprises a subordinate relay.

The microscope system according to the invention is

- At least one main objective for imaging an object provided to infinity, and

- The zoom lens is configured such that the infinite beam coming from the objective is imaged in a fixed intermediate image, wherein

- An aperture stop is provided in a downstream relay system.

The advantage of the microscope system according to the invention over the prior art is above all in an improved adaptation to the illumination pupil and to the observation of samples in contrast method.
