As I work through practical assignments in JavaScript, I decided to dive deeper into when it’s necessary to create variables and when it’s acceptable to skip them before outputting to the console.

My practical task was as follows: Write a function createHelloWorld. It should return a new function that always returns "Hello World."

I pay great attention to code optimization and strive to write correctly from the start, using solutions that are both optimal and simple. This question has become particularly relevant for me.

When and Why to Use Variables in JavaScript?

In the world of JavaScript programming, we often face the choice of whether to use variables or to output function results directly. This decision depends on the context and the goals we want to achieve. Let’s explore when it’s worth using variables and when we can do without them.

When to Use Variables:

  1. Code Optimization: If the result of a function is needed multiple times, creating a variable can significantly optimize the code. It helps avoid multiple calls to the function, which not only increases efficiency but also conserves resources. For instance, if you have a function that performs complex calculations, its result can be stored in a variable and used multiple times instead of recalculating it.
  2. Readability and Structuring of Code: Using variables makes the code more understandable and easier to digest, especially when working with more complex expressions or functions. Variables can serve as "shortcuts" for values, helping other developers (or yourself in the future) to quickly grasp what the code does. For example, instead of repeatedly writing long function calls, you can use variables to keep the code clean and easy to read.
  3. Debugging Convenience: Variables allow you to check values before using them, which can be extremely helpful when debugging your code. When you have a variable, you can easily insert console.log to see what value it holds and determine if your code is functioning correctly.

When You Can Do Without Variables:

  • One-Time Calls: If you call a function only once and simply need to output the result to the console, there’s no need to create a variable. In such cases, it’s quicker and simpler to call the function directly in console.log, which streamlines the code.


  • Simplicity: If a function returns a simple value that doesn’t require additional processing or usage, calling the function directly in console.log is entirely appropriate. This is especially true for straightforward and intuitive functions whose results are clear


Ultimately, the decision to use variables depends on the context and the objectives you want to achieve in your code. Utilizing variables helps optimize performance, enhance readability, and ease debugging. However, for simple one-time calls, there’s no need to complicate the code, and in such cases, you can do without variables.
