Vannamei production in Asia: challenges and solutions

Vannamei production in Asia: challenges and solutions

Despite losses from the COVID-19 epidemic and increased competition from Ecuador, Asia's leading shrimp exporting countries are working hard to maintain market growth. Government support for shrimp culture through cluster farming in countries such as India, Vietnam, and China is anticipated to attract new investors to the business. Every country has significant ambitions in terms of increasing its shrimp production. How shrimp production expands in each of these major producing countries differs from one country to another.

India and Vietnam have risen to prominence as the world's top shrimp producers.

India is widely regarded as a prominent global provider of value-added shrimp. Because of its low labor costs and economies of scale, it has become one of the largest producers of farmed shrimp. The capacities of the current hatcheries, feed mills, and processing units provide a solid platform for future growth.

In India, the season is coming to an end. For the time being, there are no significant pricing changes. Prices have remained consistent in order to renew orders from their key markets and compete against Ecuadorian Vannamei. The price is projected to rise during the next three months.

Vietnam's shrimp sector is facing the ongoing challenge of increasing output to satisfy expanding demand in both domestic and global markets, which is being fuelled by rising living standards. The country's shrimp production has increased dramatically over the years, approaching one million tons. Vietnam's shrimp production is predicted to increase due to the increased growing area and productivity of Vannamei shrimp.

The price of Vietnamese Vannamei remains low at the moment. Vietnam exports almost 90% of its output, primarily to the United States and some European Union countries. Since the US is still packed with large inventory from 2022, Vietnam is now competing in the market against its counterparts in India and Ecuador with the production of smaller sizes.

China has risen to become one of the world's largest shrimp importers.

Due to harsh weather conditions, China's domestic seafood production has declined, resulting in a strong demand for imported shrimp, primarily from India and Ecuador. Imports have expanded as a result to fill supply shortfalls, particularly in the retail and catering industries. Farming firms in China are attempting to improve their international market performance by implementing sophisticated control systems to maintain the water quality of the entire farming and feeding operation.

Vannamei is harvested in China's southern coastal regions, primarily in the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian. The peak season for Chinese Vannamei is in June. The new raw material is now available at a very competitive and consistent price.

The seafood sector has become a high-priority industry in major Asian-producing countries.

Main producers in Asia, which together account for two-thirds of world shrimp production, are working on significant changes in order to successfully overcome constant challenges in the market. Approaches like the empowerment of small-scale farmers and fiscal relief from the government are helping to increase shrimp production, promote sustainability, and reduce the risk of diseases.
