Vanity is Good (And why that matters to the wealthy)

Vanity… for lack of a better term… is good.
It shows that you care.
?? About your appearance.
?? About how others perceive you.
It is a foundational element of status.
Unfortunately, it’s becoming increasing rare. Something that people think is “inappropriate”.
Especially people of a certain age or socioeconomic level.
?? They give up.?
However, appearance & status matter a lot… especially if you are selling to the affluent.
According to one study done by the Oechsli Group, 77% of the affluent are influenced by how someone dresses, compared to 37% of the non-affluent.???
While it’s one of those things we’re not “suppose” to care about, it’s hardwired into our DNA.
In other words, we may “say” we don’t care about appearance & status, but the reality is that we really do.
Again, there’s a very practical reason for caring about this. ??
People (especially the rich) equate status with value. As a result, status attracts the type of people you most want to do business with, which in turn leads to greater power and influence.?
As Brett and Kate McKay write, “The thing about people who claim not to care about status is that they almost invariably live small, narrow, circumscribed lives. But while it’s easy to be indifferent to status when you’re not “in the arena” – anyone who wants to make a mark on the world will have to be tuned into status, understanding how to increase it, use it to their advantage.”
Food for thought,?
Mark
