October was an exciting month at Vanguard XXI. Personally, releasing my third book, Practicing Excellence: Restoring Civility, Faith, and Trusted Leadership in the Public Square at the Military Influencer Conference was incredible.?A huge thank you to my publisher, Kristin Bentley, and EP House Publishing for her professionalism and dedication to the process. ??
Practicing Excellence is a timely read as we head into a contentious election season. We need transformational leaders committed to restoring civility to the public square through faith and trusted leadership. ??
May we remember, as Americans, that we are united through an ideal of human flourishing that is protected by the Constitution of the United States. I spent 25 years as a professional military officer defending those freedoms so we may have a free, safe, and secure democratic process. Voting is a right and privilege we should all honor, protect, and respect. After the polls close, we are still citizens, neighbors, business associates, and human beings doing life together, all created equal. Transformational leadership collectively pursues human flourishing and living lives of excellence in the public square.?

We are experiencing, daily, our nation’s civic public square (founded upon the virtues of classic liberalism) being destroyed. We are bombarded by vices of “isms” from religious totalitarianism to progressive secularism. Educated derelicts, bully pulpits, and talking heads compete to control the narrative of an uncivil public square. They have blunted moral courage, baffled the clear mind, and burdened the soul. We face the polarity of being emotionally triggered or numbed into mediocrity. We have a leadership crisis of character, necessitating a call to action. We must restore civility to the public square with virtuous intent, critical thinking, and courageous action through faith and trusted leadership.??
The public square can be a very dangerous place. How we resist and respond to adversity determines our vulnerability to post-traumatic stress or our opportunity for post-traumatic growth. Practicing excellence aligns our passion, purpose, and precision in living a more excellent life. Character counts,?so leaders must know who they are, how they think, and how they lead. Leaders of character pursue lives of disciplined obedience. Leaders know how to train their trust and trust their training so they can show up, play up, and finish.?We can choose how to lead with character in our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, chaotic, and ambiguous) world.?

Celebrating New Beginnings in Professional Coaching Training?
In October, Vanguard XXI hosted another Vanguard Professional Coaching Course (VPCC). We had the honor of guiding high-performing leaders as they embraced the transformative power of professional coaching. Our participants completed an intensive 80-hour ICF Level 1 Certification, diving into new skills that elevate their ability to drive impact in their careers and communities.?
Throughout the week, our cohort of 23 high-achievers representing diverse markets and industries engaged in powerful networking, creating opportunities for career growth, business development, and lasting connections. We are thrilled to witness the birth of multiple new coaching businesses, including those started by transitioning military veterans and alumni of The COMMIT Foundation and The Honor Foundation.?
In partnership with the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce, we enjoyed an elegant fine dining experience at 11th & Bay and hosted our training at the inspiring National Infantry Museum Foundation—America’s #1 Free Museum. Thank you to everyone who made this week unforgettable, and congratulations to our newest coaches!?

Building a Legacy of Ethical Leadership and Vertical Integration?
This year, Vanguard XXI had the privilege of completing a comprehensive, year-long Ethical Leadership Series with The Westervelt Company and its Executive Leadership Team. Through four powerful sessions, we explored excellence in ethics, environmental responsibility, and economic vitality—essential pillars for leaders striving to build a vertically integrated and sustainable business.?
Our final session was a capstone challenge: teams applied Vanguard XXI’s Ethical Leadership Decision-Making Process to real-world strategic proposals. The results were nothing short of inspiring! Each team presented actionable, ethical strategies that aligned their organizational goals with their core values.?
