Values versus Beliefs

Values versus Beliefs

Today's BED Talk is about the difference between values and beliefs ... a vital difference that our current times could certainly use to enhance our conversations, our listening and our learning.

Values (or personal values) are those things that you are clear on and which are generally unbending. These are the things you hold onto even when it's hard, risky or expensive. It's also important for you to get clear on what your values are.

And it's important that you be deeply grounded in your values and that you hold onto to them with all your heart.

In contrast, beliefs are not values ... they're just things you believe about life, about people, about situations and even about yourself. Unlike values, beliefs are not meant to be held onto. It's important that we stay open to different beliefs and perspectives so that we can continue learning and growing.

Being unattached to our beliefs is also important in facilitating open dialogues and conversations.

I want to be clear ... when I'm talking about beliefs, I'm not necessarily talking about religious beliefs. While I'm always open to hearing and learning about other religious belief systems, you may choose to hold on dearly to your religious beliefs (although I wonder why the need to hold onto them unless you're afraid you'll lose them).

I am talking the wide range of things you believe in or about. I don't understand why we work so hard to hang onto (and are attached to) our beliefs because those beliefs only came into being by choice and we can choose to change our beliefs (or at least be open to hearing other's beliefs).

That's it -- keep in mind that values are not beliefs and beliefs are not values. Values are meant to be grounded and held onto, while beliefs are meant to be explored, clarified and assessed.

Weigh in ... I want to hear your thoughts and ideas.
