You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack, You may find yourself in another part of the world, You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile, You may find yourself in a beautiful house with a beautiful wife, You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here? - Once in a Lifetime, Talking Heads
The holidays fade in the rear-view mirror. Photos from Davos fill the feed. Mobile World Congress is right around the corner. 2024 is here in earnest, ready or not. Listen and learn, because this is no time to stand still. Sharing some tips from the community that I hope will prove helpful.
So without further adieu, this week's Friday Five, five posts that touched a nerve with the community
This Week's Friday Five
Culture is Dynamic, Values never change
The biggest advantage of our values is they stay the same, but our culture changes. When people ask about culture, I struggle because we haven't got one. Each of our offices, each of our teams, they're embracing the environment around them and it's totally different .... We've embraced diverse teams - Dominic Price
So much richness in this 2:29. Love the concept of a dynamic culture based on bedrock values. Scott and Mike have been running it this way, their way, since the beginning. Many unique traits. Feel free to use whichever works for you, Atlassian publishes their methods and tools broadly (can't beat that Open Souce Ethos)

No Fun - Layoffs on TikTok
I don't think there's anything we can say in this moment or today that's going to change the way that you feel - HR Staff member on the layoff call
No fun for sure. Unfortunately, 'making sense' from the employee's perspective isn't necessarily part of the process. The decision is being made through a different lens. Good news, easier the second time, etc. Good news, life's not wrecked, just re-routed. The future is unpredictable, optimize for flexibility. Don't bet or count on 'fair'

Flexibility is the New Frontier
I think in some ways flexibility is a new frontier of freedom - Rob Sadow ?
Flexibility as the new frontier of freedom. A changed psychology in people's relationship with work and life. Covid was a global moment, that extended for years, and according to your local sanitation department, is probably raging in your neighborhood today, almost 4 years since we all learned a new set of vocabulary. We're not going back.
Thanks for sharing Rob

An Active Participant
Because I have full flexibility around my working hours, I've become a different person, a far more active participant in a smaller community - Dave Cairns
Async is the unlock.
It requires intentional communication protocols, trust, better meeting discipline, and a few more things you can learn from Atlassian or GitLab's remote work manuals et al. Figure them out, and unleash another level of intrinsic motivation as it frees people up to do more of things that are important to them.
Then, as Darren says ' If you empower people to live better lives, they're going to explode with gratitude in the form of productivity back to the company, and I really think that's the next frontier for organizations that enable it - Darren Murph, https:// lnkd.in/g9qhUY6K

That gets me jazzed
THAT is what gets me jazzed about a technology when the winds of change are all blowing in the same direction, things change fast - Derek Kerton
Stacked, aligned trends. Scale market, investment, and innovation?Software as an increasing percentage of the whole. Level 5 autonomy will get here, with plenty of controlled applications before that. Derek looks for herds of trends on the move, in the same direction, then jumps in with both feet to connect SmallCo and BigCo around innovation opportunities.

9 个月I like your Talking Heads reference. But given the clip you have of me here, I'll cite the words of Klaus Meine: The world is closing in And did you ever think That we could be so close like brothers? The future's in the air, I can feel it everywhere I'm blowing with the wind of change Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away (dream away) In the wind of change
