Values-Based LinkedIn Use. I find myself saying this more and more lately. Referring to my program as 'Values-Based LinkedIn Training'. What is that all about? And whose values are we talking about here? Well, YOURS!
Did you notice the shift?
For years and years I've been carrying on about how your LinkedIn Presence needs your personality. Lately I've been mentioning values more and more. Ultimately though, I believe you need both!
Your Skills, Knowledge & Experience are NOT Unique.
Bummer ey? When what you sell is knowledge, when you are a so-called service-based business owner then I have news for you. We come 13 to a dozen.
Your Dream Client's Buyers Journey
Buyers journey, lol, thought I'd throw a fancy word in there. Anyhow, there's all those things such as realising they need help or want to outsource. What it is they want to be fixed. What outcome they are after...
Then they'll start looking for someone to work with (yup that'll be you and me).
They'll look into our experience, expertise, skills all those objective criteria. As I said, that leaves too much choice. When buying a service though, something else leads to the ultimate buying decision...
Is this my kinda person?
This is where your personality comes into it. I am way too chatty for some. My language is a bit too colourful for others. And then there are those who spit out their tea laughing when they read my LinkedIn Headline. They feel drawn to me. Think it'll be a hoot to work with me.
And you see, THAT is how you attract your dream clients.
Those clients who could be your next best friend. And to level up a bit I'm now saying that your values are equally important. That is those values that are make-or-break for you. The ones where you don't like to work with people who have opposite views.
Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, ending 50 years of Federal abortion rights.
I've seen quite a few posts stating their outrage about this court rule and mentioning they will disconnect, unfollow or block those who support this ruling.
I decided not to do so. It is too easy to live in a bubble of like-minded people. As annoying as I may find it, I do want to see posts with different views. It gives me something to think about AND it keeps me in the loop of the sentiments out there in the real world. Outside my little bubble.
This was my post. A list of things I believe in. I didn't get any opposing comments on my post (have I gained 9000 followers sharing the same values?!?).

There was a person sharing my post though. Not a connection. They shared it with the following post: "What about killing a human being in the name of abortion? If you don't want to have it why? Do you take it in at first instance"
My comment: "Thank you for sharing my post. We don't have to agree. We each have the freedom to share our opinions. Thank you for sharing mine".
Round-up of value-based posts you may have missed.
??Big change to skills on your LinkedIn Profile. Ok, so this is not so much a values-based post, but an amazing #LinkedInTips post. Why amazing? Because I added a 9-page resource with it! And nothing is stopping you from sneaking your values into your skills. Corporate Social Responsibility, DEI or Sustainable Business Strategies are perfectly decent skills. ??[click here to read the full post]
??Speaking up about what I believe in. This is the post with the image. It only cost me 1 connection and 3 followers. As I said, my network might have been built by me expressing my personality and values over the years. ??[click here to see the full post]
??Using groups to display what you stand for. Have you ever paid attention to the interests section at the bottom of your profile? Not many people may scroll that far down, but when they do, what do they see? Are you following a company that is in the news these days for something that conflicts with your values? And what do your groups say about you? ??[click here to learn how to optimise this section]
?? Things that scare the bejeeeezzzssus out of me. Ok, this is a personality one, not a values-based. It even goes a step further. I guess the language and tone of voice of the post show you my personality. Owning up to what scares me actually falls in the category of getting personal. You definitely don't have to do that. I tend to be an open book, so every once in a while I do. ??[click here to find out what scares me]
??A video that was out of date as soon as I posted it. DUH gotta love LinkedIn for always changing. Often improving. Not always though. In this case they took away the option to add a 30-character descriptive text to the websites in your contact info. Ugh. But the good news... when you have Creator Mode switched on you can now add a link in FULL VIEW on your profile! ??[click here to read post / watch video]
?Ask the public. The joy (not) of rebranding when you have your reasons but still are so attached to your current visual brand. And then all those designs... I asked the people on LinkedIn for feedback on possible new logos. And have to tell you there is so much to learn about how people perceive you from the comments. Yup, my personality and values came up. ??[click here to scroll through the design options and read the amazing comments]
??Fame comes with responsibility. So when all the other influencers started posting pictures without make-up I could not stay behind, right? Except... apart from the formal photo shoot images I don't wear makeup in any image or video you see of me. Decided to document my day in selfies instead. Still regret posting #7 but hey, that's what keeping it real is all about. Thankfully someone outdid me in the comments. ??[click here to see me waking up and throughout the day]
?? Are you a service-based business owner? Tough luck! Nobody needs you. ?? Or me for that matter. And when do they, your expertise comes 13 in a dozen. Don't despair, in this video you'll get a neat little exercise to discover what sets you apart from the other experts in your field. ??[click here to find out how you can get the accompanying worksheet]
??THE END ??
There you go. You did your bit, reading (or scrolling) right till the end. I did my bit, writing it all for you. Now what?
Now that's not so hard, is it? Three easy little steps to encourage me to keep writing those newsletters! ??

2 年Wonderful article, Petra Fisher which (of course!) very clearly shows your personality. You make it all sound so easy - being yourself, finding a potential post in just about everything, commenting and adding value at the same time. I still find reacting on LI as if in a 'normal' conversation somewhat tricky; as you know I often find myself overthinking my comments and so losing that authenticity. (Particularly difficult for an #editor not to overthink and reread everything 10x before posting as I have to be absolutely certain there are no typos ??.) But yeah, values and authenticity are so important and expressing them here on LI has resulted in some wonderful conversations. Can't do so right now, but later on today I'll definitely come back to the post and click on all the links - looking forward to learning even more from you ??
Writing the words you want to read.
2 年I received a comment recently that bring openly political was going to cost me clients. I thought my political comment was pretty tame, honestly. While I don't believe in eradicating contacts who don't agree with me in every area, I know who I want to spend time with! Never worried about people rejecting me because of where I stand on issues that are important to me.

2 年Thanks Petra & whole-heartedly agree. These days the word authenticity gets thrown around a lot. Don't get me wrong, I think that showing up as who you really are is super important. With that said, a Values based approach goes even further & gives us an insight into your Heart and Spirit. I often note that we're all one Google search away from solving most problems in our lives - so ?????? ?????????? ???? ???????? ???? ????????????, ?? ????????, ???? ?? ??????????? The fact is that we are social creatures - we operate on another level when we have someone external to us who will walk alongside us, challenge-support-teach us, + cheer us on to help us to win. As you've highlighted that person could be one of many out there. I believe that if you are going to invest in yourself then being aligned with your coach is essential - it really is best for everyone & optimises the outcomes. This phenomenon of ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? ???? ?????????????? is also one of the reasons I add a bonus Values session in for my coaching clients. Sure I can help them to #WinWithMoney but what does truly mean if it is not aligned with the most important goals for their family & their Values. Awesome article Petra ????
