Values-Based Leadership

Values-Based Leadership

“Are you watching the movie, or are you in the movie?”?

This is the question former chairman and CEO of Baxter International Inc. and Kellogg Professor Harry Kraemer posed to Marshall Goldsmith’s 100 Coaches Community during our “Mondays with Marshall” meeting.? This was part of his discussion about the importance of “values-based leadership.”? He reminded us of the “significance of the small.”

We can look at what is happening in global conflicts, local disasters, or any crucial issues around us and think, “What can I do?” Sometimes, we might easily dismiss these issues as something too big for us to be able to make a difference.? So, his concept of the “significance of the small” is a powerful reminder that we ALL can do something. Harry said he might not be able to solve climate change, but he can separate his garbage, or he can be deliberate in the products he uses.? He encouraged us to “Get in the movie! Do something!”

Marshall Goldsmith agreed.? He, too, said he can’t say he invented vaccines, but he did coach several people involved with vaccine creation.? He didn’t turn around the Ford Motor Company, but he coached the CEO who did.??

Marshall then shared with us that in the past, he was sometimes negative about small things.? He then realized that we might think our one-hour speech may not make a lasting change but then asked, “Did they have a better hour?” He went on to ask: “What happens if 500 people have a better minute because of a piece of knowledge I share on social media with my 1.5 million followers? That’s 500 better minutes people in the world have.”?

Marshall Goldsmith interviewed Harry Kraemer on the 100 Coaches "Mondays with Marshall" meeting.

A key to values-based leadership is having core values. Harry Kraemer reminded us that our core values are never negotiable. We don’t compromise those.

Harry Kraemer’s values-based leadership inspired one of his students to start a social enterprise that has supported more than four million farm families in Africa.? Harry has donated his money from speaking fees and book sales to support the One Acre Fund created by Andrew Youn. ?Supporting the One Acre Fund is another great way to show values-based leadership.

So if it’s just one small action we take today, even if it’s just one minute, in harmony with the wisdom from Marshall Goldsmith and Harry Kraemer, may we all “get in the movie” by recognizing the “significance of the small” and remember the importance of identifying and living by our core values so we can be values-based leaders.?

Loved being there Eddie Turner. Powerful insights from both Harry Kraemer, Jr. and Marshall Goldsmith on living by core values and the ‘significance of the small.’ This message resonates deeply with credibility—being trusted, known, and liked is built on consistent, values-driven actions, even the small ones. When we align our everyday choices with our values, we’re ‘in the movie,’ making a real impact. Whether it’s inspiring a single person or leading change at scale, each choice contributes to a ripple effect. Thanks for this reminder to lead with intentionality and integrity!
