Happy Thursday, Flow Community!
Last week, we laid the foundation for "MENDing" our businesses by stepping back and reflecting on our leadership identity, emphasizing the importance of aligning our values and beliefs with our actions. Today, we're diving deeper into the heart of this alignment by exploring two critical types of values: Elemental and Instrumental Values. Understanding these will help you not only reinforce your leadership identity but also sustainably scale your business through Flow Culture.
Elemental Values: The Core of Your Leadership Identity
Elemental values are the deep-seated principles that define who you are at your core. These are the values that remain steadfast regardless of circumstances, guiding your behavior and decision-making even in the face of adversity. They are your "non-negotiables," the bedrock of your leadership identity.
For example, values such as integrity, authenticity, and empathy often fall into the elemental category. When you operate from these values, your leadership becomes consistent, trustworthy, and magnetic. People know what to expect from you, which builds a strong, cohesive culture within your organization.
However, when your actions are not aligned with your elemental values, it creates a disconnect. This misalignment can lead to confusion, mistrust, and an unstable organizational culture, ultimately hindering your ability to scale.
Instrumental Values: The Tools for Achieving Your Vision
While elemental values define your core, instrumental values are the tools or methods you use to achieve your goals. These values are more adaptable and often reflect your strategies, priorities, and operational choices. Examples of instrumental values include innovation, efficiency, and collaboration.
Instrumental values guide how you navigate day-to-day operations and how you respond to challenges. They are essential in creating a flexible and resilient organization capable of sustaining growth. However, for these values to be effective, they must be in harmony with your elemental values. For instance, if you value integrity (elemental) but push for results at any cost (instrumental), you create an internal conflict that can lead to burnout, ethical dilemmas, and a toxic work environment.
The Synergy of Elemental and Instrumental Values in Flow Culture
Flow Culture thrives on the synergy between your elemental and instrumental values. When these values are in alignment, your leadership becomes a powerful force that drives sustainable growth. Here’s how:
The Path to Alignment: Reflection and Action
Last week, I asked you to do some inner work and determine the beliefs that are driving your current leadership style. Why? Because those beliefs point to your values, and this week, we're going to take another step toward alignment. Ask yourself:
By taking the time to align your values, you’re not just creating a better environment for your team—you’re setting the stage for sustainable, scalable growth that resonates from the top down.
