The Value of Winning

The Value of Winning

I’ve been watching a show called “Outlast”. The rules of the game are pretty simple.

  • There are 4 teams
  • Every individual has to be on a team, or they have to go home
  • The last team standing splits $1,000,000

There was a player whose team all had to go home early. He was alone, which forced him to make a long trek to find another team to join. When he approached the closest team to his camp, they weren’t too enthusiastic about bringing on another player (UNDERSTANDABLY). It would be another mouth to feed and less money in the end. ?

Makes sense, right? But, nonetheless, they CHOSE to hear him out.

He shared his story about his wife, complications in childbirth, and medical bills. He also shared how committed he was to get to the end. After hearing his story, they deliberated and discussed the options.

This was a GAME after all and point it to WIN. If they took him on and won, that would mean less money. If they let him go, it’s one less player to worry about. If they take him in, it could be a liability, but at the same time, it’s an OPPORTUNITY to serve a person in need.

SO, WHAT DID THEY DO?

Well, one player (Brenden), was quoted as saying…

“If this wasn’t a game, I would’ve helped the guy, why would I change who I am in my heart to win a game?”

WOW! I love this quote from the big burley, mountain man. Here is a team of people who could have easily blamed any ruthless behavior on the spirit of winning. They would have benefited greatly from sending this person home, but instead they chose to adhere to their VALUES over winning a game.

It WASN’T an EASY choice, and yet, they let their values lead the way.

I guess I felt the need to share this story because it’s a great reminder that life is about more than wins and losses. It’s about more than the accolades. It’s about more than making sure “I GET MINE!”

In a world where we put winners on a pedestal, it can seem nearly impossible to SACRIFICE the “W” for the greater good. But I believe that in the end, life is more FULFILLING when we stay TRUE to our VALUES, even when it may mean we have to sacrifice the trophy.

Here’s to your journey in our world my friend. Make it a fantastic Tuesday and I hope to see you soon.

This hit home, Dan Gomer. Brendan’s quote really puts things in perspective. Staying true to our values, even when there’s something big at stake, is rare but so rewarding in the long run. I’ve seen this play out in business decisions where prioritizing integrity led to more meaningful outcomes.?
