Value of Soft Skills in Age of AI

Over the last several years, the pace of innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) has accelerated. This field of computer science is devoted to creating machines capable of performing tasks that used to require human intelligence.

While we do not always know the full impact of such technological advancement, with AI it is becoming increasingly clear that will disrupt nearly every industry in one way or another. Many people fear a future in which robots have eliminated human employees from the workforce, but AI technology is not nearly that sophisticated yet.

Research show that more than 4 in 10 companies believe automation will have a major impact on jobs, and 61% of companies are now actively redesigning jobs around AI and robotics.

Change is inevitable. As organizations continue to adapt, successful leaders know that developing employee soft skills is essential and AI will offer new opportunities for companies to create value, give rise to new jobs and change the emphasis on the types of skills employers will need to thrive.

For employers, recognizing proficiency in current skills and fields is not the only key to predicting talent success. As AI continues to advance and redefine the types of human skills companies need, it will be up to human workers to adapt and learn quickly.

“Soft skills” refer to the interpersonal characteristics that enable a person to interact effectively with others. Soft skills are transferable, skills that can be exercised regardless of the job at which the individual is working.

Soft skills that organizations should focus on are critical thinking, creativity, leadership, emotional intelligence, active listening, empathy, nonverbal communication, flexibility and work ethic.

For many professionals, understanding the importance of those soft skills may be the key to future career success.

If there is going to be a lot of corporate, employment and industry-wide disruptions, having a set of soft skills that can be readily taken with you to any new job environment will ultimately provide employees with the greatest amount of value as they ride the coming storms.
