Showing respect is important for you as a person and also for your health and well-being.
Respect is often misunderstood, and many people expect others to show it to them, while not practicing this themselves.
Respect does not just build your character, it reveals it, as explained in an amazing quote by my stunning partner, Arthie Moore:
“ you do not have to like every person you come into contact with. However, your ability to show respect and be respectful to the person in front of you, is a direct reflection on your character, not theirs” – Arthie Moore
If that does not grab your attention, the other quote she has on the subject of Respect should also support that subject;
“At the level of respect all people are equal” – Arthie Moore
Arthie always uses and explains these quotes in her life changing Diversity and Inclusion workshops.
As specialists, we provide training in a powerful and hugely impactful process called Values Based Leadership with families, communities, organizations and entire countries to awaken people, young and old, to the awareness of different basic human values and what they can do for you. The Value of Respect is one of the many values we work with.
Here are some important points about Respect; What it is, what benefits you will get in being respectful and some simple steps to follow in order to become more respectful :
? Respect is recognizing that someone or something has value and expressing that value through our words or actions.
? Respect is necessary to build successful relationships
? Every person wants to be respected, even young children
? Self Respect is where it all begins; You can not expect others to respect you if you don’t respect yourself!
? Respect is never earned through fear.
Some Benefits of BEING Respectful
? You will receive the respect of others. When you treat others kindly and with respect, they are much more likely to return your respect and kindness. Respect creates respect.
? You will bring peace to your environment. When you respect the views and beliefs of others, you will often be able to avoid unnecessary conflicts and confrontation.
Some Characteristics of a Person who IS Respectful
? These people keep their integrity intact. They do not say or do things that go against their Personal Values System or allow others to manipulate them into behaving in a manner that is less than what they believe is right.
? They have good manners. They speak with kindness, use words like “please”, and ”Thank you” and have regard for the social customs of the environment
Some Steps to Follow to BECOME more Respectful
? Listen to others. Give full attention to people when they are speaking. Do not interrupt, judge, or make negative faces or gestures.
? Be Polite. Make a focused effort to remain polite, especially when you are frustrated, angry, in a hurry or with someone who tries your patience.
When you practice respect, it will be most beneficial to you and your wellbeing. You will become more aware, not just of being respectful but also receiving respect from others….Surely, that can never be a bad thing.
Just as in all the other areas already talked into, nothing will change until you change. Start this practice today!
