The Value in Repairing Relationships

The Value in Repairing Relationships

Relationships are essential for our success. As a matter of fact, success without relationships, without people to share it with, seems empty and meaningless.

The complexity of the human nature can affect the opportunities to build effective long-term relationships that, in turn, can have tremendous benefits to our lives on both personal and professional levels.

How can we ensure that we continue building on the people that bring so much value to our lives, even after there has been a rupture where damage has been caused on either party?

For me, there have been a couple of instances that I can think of where I completely stopped investing into others after I felt hurt by their actions and I am sure that has been the case for many of us.?As humans, we are almost guaranteed to let our emotions and personalities dictate our behaviors. That can sometimes cause a rift, even with the people that we care for the most. Is it wise to let these instances affect the bonds of a meaningful connection with others?

The Japanese have an ancient process called Kintsugi (for the full description check out this article https://mymodernmet.com/kintsugi-kintsukuroi/) which involves repairing old pottery with gold. Often times, this makes the original piece look better and more valuable than it was in its original form. Like old pottery, relationships will have breaking moments where the original form is damaged in what appears to be beyond repair. However, that is not necessarily the case if we can see past what is in front us and the potential these moments represent to make the relationship better than ever by mending the cracks with gold and making it stronger and more beautiful than it was at its conception.

Here are three ways to ensure that we are working toward improving any relationship - either personal or professional - after there has been damage done and it seems like you are in a place of no return:

1.???You have to want to invest into the relationship.

The truth is that the process of fixing it, or better yet, of improving it, is a long and arduous one. If you are not willing to truly invest in it, then there is no chance. Dig deep, really go inside, and figure out if it is worth the effort because only by confronting this question will you put yourself in a place, mentally, to do what is required to achieve it.

2. Communication is key!

Remember that effective communication is not getting your point out. It is the person the message is intended for actually receiving the message and understanding your point! If that person is not receiving the information, then it is up to YOU - not them - to change the approach. You can’t control how others take in information; you can only control how you deliver it. In order for your relationship to improve, to get to the point where it is better than it was, you have to be willing to change how you communicate.

3.???Consistency is the most important element.

Consistent effort shows to others that you want to work on improving the past. Being consistent is probably one of the simplest ways that you show to others that you care, and yet it is very underrated. Many of us understand the power of consistent effort in building strong relationships.

My closing thought is that people are worth investing in, and we all need meaningful relationships in order to live a full life. If we can take time to see past the present moment and realize that regardless of the situation there is an opportunity to improve, then we can potentially end up with something worth its weight in gold!
