I came across a 1997 clip of Steve Jobs talking about marketing - lol - is nothing new, does anything change, will my baggy trousers come back into fashion?
Steve was talking about Marketing, and how in such a 'noisy world' we have little chance to get people to think about us or our business, brand etc. Great stuff over 20 years ago and as relevant now as it was then...
It made me think of my experience working with prospects and clients - and a pattern that is is appearing around the struggle some early entrepreneurs and businesses have with marketing to a niche. There's a fear of losing out if they don't offer everything, go after everything, never say no etc. I get it, cash flow is a challenge so its hard to say no to any opportunity. This is half of the pattern, because the other side of the coin is I rarely have any trouble talking about niche and understanding the niche of more mature, successful businesses - solo-preneurs or multi nationals...
Here's my thoughts, and the clip - which is awesome.
Key take away - its marketing, so lets market to the audience that is going to take your business where you want it to be. You can still decide to work on a lucrative legacy opportunity that comes your way. But now you're thinking, planning and behaving strategically and moving forward towards those long term goals and not trapped in a spiraling eddy.

5 年What an inspiring line from Steve Jobs: "We have to be really clear on what we want Them to know about Us . . . "

6 年Niche is essential for any business, it is just the size and scope of the niche that varies with the scale of the company. Sometimes prospects / customers do not view a niche in the same way as sales / marketing people and that can be a challenge.?

6 年Great article Mick. I’ve spent the day with a small group of business owners, and a couple of account executives for a large organisation, helping them to gain clarity on their value proposition to their niche market so that their networking (and other marketing strategies) work better for them.
