The Value of Post-Interview Thank-Yous

The Value of Post-Interview Thank-Yous

Thank you.

2 little words that can make a bloody big impact, especially when it comes to your job search.

So why don’t more people say it following an interview? In my opinion there are a few reasons:

  • Fear of appearing overeager
  • Worrying about saying the wrong thing
  • Uncertainty about etiquette/ process

In over 12 years of recruiting, I can’t think of a time (when done right) that a thank you email was poorly received.

Yep, sometimes they may not impact a decision that’s already been made but provided you’re not cutting out letters from magazines and sending it in the post, a thank you message certainly won’t harm your chances of landing a job.

So what have you got to lose?

If you’re coming round to the idea here are a few things to consider:

  1. As much as an interview is a two way street, employers like to feel wanted too. You don’t have to stop playing it cool but showing your keen leaves no doubt in the interviewer’s mind that you’d like to be considered for the job.??
  2. If there’s something you wished you’d said in the interview or a point you want to clarify here’s your chance. This might be your final shot to make a good impression so make it count.
  3. Even if you're being represented through a recruitment agency, the thank you email can still play a vital role. You can send it to your contact at the agency with a note to pass along your thanks to the interviewers or give them a heads up that you’d like to send it directly.
  4. Keep it professional, and positive. Reiterate your interest, mention something specific from the interview that excited you, and close by expressing your eagerness to hear back.

So write it, send it and if you haven't heard back after a few days a gentle nudge is definitely acceptable. Remember, we’re trying to leave a positive impression here, not come across like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.

And on that note,

The End.
