The Value Movement

The Value Movement

They say there’s no “I” in team … but there certainly should be a lot of value.

Any team, group or network of people can only exist in the presence of value. You say, but in my workplace only some people add a lot of value … yes, that’s my point exactly. Valuable People hold it together, and those who are not adding value are holding the business back.

Nothing works if the value ain’t right! I repeat, nothing! I’m not even talking about business. Let’s take a relationship or marriage: Why would you be with anyone unless they provided value to you? Same goes for them. Value is why someone will stay with you.

What about a sports team? Teammates all chipping in? I could go on — but you get the idea.

It’s become popular to ignore value, yet life doesn’t work without it. A century of advertising has certainly helped get everyone interested in feeling good and fueled the self-centered idea of “what’s in it for me?”. It’s become almost cool to get as much as you can for yourself while delivering as little as possible in return.

The truth is, life doesn’t work that way. It the complete opposite.

Let’s define value and how it applies to being successful in business, relationships and life.

Value

Value: The importance, worth, or usefulness of something: The degree to which someone or something is important or useful.

Example: “Your support is of great value.”

It also has a definition which relates to money:

Monetary or material worth, as in commerce or trade. The worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged or in terms of some medium of exchange: Its value was 20,000 dollars. This piece of land has greatly increased in value.

Notice that money is secondary. People only hand over their money when they feel something is important, useful or worthwhile.

The origin of the word value tells us more:

“the degree to which something is useful,” from an Old French word meaning “worth, price, moral worth. Reputation”. From Latin valere “”think highly of, be strong, be well, be worth”

Value is your friend

So all your best friends, best staff, best bosses, best people specialise in adding more value. If something or someone is not adding value it’s a liability to you, your business, your life.

Work should be valuable

I call valuable work Vwork. But why don’t we just call it work?

Because people have become confused about work. It means different things to different people.

Some, think its turning up and doing nothing more than occupying a chair while breathing for 8 hours a day.

Some think it’s looking busy and running around.

Some managers think it’s holding meetings and making themselves look impressive.

And some think it’s getting things done which are worthwhile and valuable to others.

That last is Vwork. That is what makes you happy — delivering help and results to others.

Getting things done, closing a deal, helping a customer, helping your boss, etc..

Vwork makes the world go round and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Some will argue with this point but they generally don’t engage it Vwork. it just doesn’t hold up in the real world.

Let’s take a thing we all need: Water.

It doesn’t just magically appear when you turn on the tap. It requires a chain of Vwork Results to be in place to make that water flow out. It requires the manufacture and installation of pipes The water plant had to built and constantly maintained. Day in, day out. Vwork staff have to turn up and do their jobs … and so does management. Good management ensures all aspects of the organisation work well and deliver value.

Only after Vwork People produce Vwork results, do you get water flowing out whenever you want it.

The Vwork Movement

I think you can agree the world needs more value, not less. It’s needed more than ever.

And that’s what the Vwork movement is all about: Finding and hiring Vwork People, raising the Vwork output of the existing staff, management, bosses, businesses, anyone!

You’ll find anyone who disagrees with producing Vwork results is far better outside your business, and your circle of friends (or more bluntly, no part of your life!)

The Vwork movement is not about making the world perfect, it’s about being more successful, having more money, a better standard of living and being happier. With Vwork people producing Vwork results, that place called “work” where we spend most of our life, would be a lot more fun, don’t you think?
