The Value Of Making The Change You Know You Should

We've always said this. "We don't sell air and we don't sell advertising." Yes, advertisers purchase ads through radio, I get it, but that's not where our value comes from in this business.

We essentially rent or sell access to our strong local relationships with listeners. I'm not a fan of saying "Live & Local." That's because I encourage clients and local radio everywhere to focus on being relational.

That's because it isn't live and local alone that gives us stronger value than other media; it's our relationships.

Now, the depth of your relationships depend highly on your local radio brands. For that, you have to be honest with yourself about how your local radio stations spread impact and how relational your on-air, sales and leadership is in your market today. Being honest also requires you to think about your relationship with employees. That culture - like your attitude in business - will also determine the speed, productivity and even revenue opportunity of your company today.

If you want to actually grow your revenue in 2024, I highly recommend you focus now on:

  1. The Quality Of Your Products - Do you have a strategic plan for each of your local radio stations? Is there a powerful focus on the best and most appropriate content? Are you focused on personalities connecting consumers to your local brands?
  2. The Culture Of Your Business, Employees & Leadership - What do you do to consistently strengthen the relationship between employees and leadership? How do you engage your employees in forming and growing your culture and your goals?
  3. Concentrate On Consumer Experience - Ultimately, bad consumer experiences will lead to lost brands and then radio stations that are not brands at all and have low connection to consumers. Low connection = low value.
  4. Constantly Secure Great Customer Experiences - It's one thing to have great products and the ability to deliver, but if you are not consistently focused on improving customer experiences with your sellers, your business (logistics) and your local radio brands, you can run into significant TROUBLE. Consistently improving these experiences for your customers will help you maintain and grow revenue.

Don't kid yourself. Being on the radio isn't enough today. Start with what happens when you flip on your local radio brands. I invite you to improve your radio brands going into 2024. Not because it is our business. Because it is your business and what you sell.

This is a great time of year. Revenue should be up. So much is riding on what happens in November and December for many of your clients, but January, February and March are coming. What is your plan?

Today you have to do so many things. Do you have enough ideas? Ideas are money in today's world. How do you encourage your programming staff? Your sellers?
