The Value Investor's Pledge
The day you decide to become an active investor in the marketplace is the day you have decided to take on a degree of responsibility that is far greater than yourself. For those who are merely out for self will not reap the rewards of those who are fulfilling a higher cause.
I understand...
I understand that the mission of creating wealth as an investor is much bigger than myself.
I understand that my contributions to businesses as an investor will help create jobs and opportunities for others while simultaneously improving the health of the overall economy.
I understand that the most serious investors look at a stock as more than just a ticker symbol, as each stock represents an actual living and breathing company.
I understand that irresponsible management of my own wealth, no matter how small the impact may be, could very well play a role in disrupting the economy.
I understand that lucrative investment opportunities will exist in any type of turbulent economic environment.
I understand that the next generation of my lineage is counting on me to display a fine example for them to follow as an investor.
The serious investor...
The serious investor understands that their stock purchases represent a piece of ownership of the actual company itself.
The serious investor will uncover the intrinsic value of a business before making any commitments.
The serious investor will require that the management team has a track record of being honest at all times, regardless of how good or bad the situation may be before investing any amount of funds to the business.
The serious investor will approach stock purchases as a means of pouring capital into a company in exchange for owning a share of the future profits of the business.
The serious investor will manage future profits in a responsible manner that will not only improve his or her own net worth but will also improve the state of our economy.
The serious investor will resist the temptation of partaking in high risk "blindfolded" speculative endeavors no matter how enticing it may seem.
The serious investor understands that Wall Street primarily makes their money from the commissions generated from active trading in the stock market for their own benefit, but not necessarily for the benefit of the individual investor.
The serious investor understands that broker-dealers do not have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the individual investor, therefore the serious investor will shield him or herself from broker-dealers that have ulterior motives.
I will...
I will block out the noise from the media outlets.
I will maintain a stable temperament and not lose my mind if my portfolio drops in value on any given day.
I will play the long game and I will not invest for short-term gain.
I will not panic when Wall Street gurus are preaching "fear" to the masses.
I will maintain my composure in the midst of economic chaos.
I will NOT allow an economic decline to alter my mental state of being.
I will weather the storms of the market and trust that I did not overlook any alarming factors through the application of sound fundamental analysis of my holdings.
Millionaires are made during times of economic growth and recessions.
I will exercise patience and due diligence on the pursuit of seeking out value-based investment opportunities.
I will stand firm and not allow the volatility of the market to throw me off balance.
I will take care of my mind, body, and soul through meditation, regular exercise and proper diet as I know that being weak and unhealthy will have a negative impact on my investment decisions.
I will fulfill the duty of playing my part in stimulating the global economy through prudent investing.
I am indeed a serious investor, I understand the value-based approach, and I will adhere to this pledge!
