The Value of Hindsight: Lessons from White Football Boots and Non-Executive Directors!

The Value of Hindsight: Lessons from White Football Boots and Non-Executive Directors!

You've probably seen the buzz surrounding the latest launch of Nike's all-white football boots. Aesthetically pleasing? Absolutely. Practical? Perhaps not so much. A single game on a muddy pitch and those pristine boots will never look the same again. This is a perfect example of how hindsight might have served as a valuable tool in the design phase.

The Allure of the New

In business, just like in sport, there's a perennial attraction to the "new and shiny." Just look at many of the (vc funded) "start up" offices in Manchester! ??

New products, new strategies, and even new personnel can all seem extraordinarily appealing. However, like an all-white pair of football boots, they can also come with unforeseen challenges. The value of hindsight - knowing what you now know - can be incalculable.

What Non-Executives Bring to the Table

This is where non-executive directors come into play, particularly for members of platforms like VirtualNonExecs.com. A non-executive director has likely seen similar plays before, whether it’s a product launch, market entry, or a change in business strategy. They bring a depth of experience and, most importantly, the gift of hindsight. They can look at a business plan or product concept and see the potential pitfalls or opportunities that may not be immediately obvious to those too close to the project.

Tying it Together

Just imagine if the design team behind the all-white football boots had someone (probably a parent!) in the room saying, "They look fantastic, but how will they hold up after a game on a wet, muddy field?" That voice of caution could have led to a design as practical as it is appealing.

Having a non-executive director can serve the same purpose in a business setting. They can be the voice of reason, asking the necessary questions that come only from experience and hindsight, helping you avoid costly or reputation-damaging errors.

So the next time you’re about to make a pivotal decision, think about those all-white football boots. They might look fantastic at the launch, but it’s how they perform in the field that really counts. In business, as in football, a little hindsight goes a long way.

Nothing new here. White football boots were around in the early 1970’s, marketed in the name of the great Alan Ball. Trendy for a few years and then faded away.

Great article and as the dad of a football mad 10 year old - whoever thought white boots were a good idea needs to be made to clean all the beige, grey, off white boots in my garage! Moving forward my son can only have black boots! Luckily I’ve told him that’s what Ninjas wear ???? and he’s cool with it ????
