Wine and Bourbon. People will pay princely sums for them the older they are. Every year they age seems to provide exponential value. If only we as workers could get the same treatment. In todays business climate it seems those added years and experience that used to mean so much are now a liability. We are driving up health care premiums and costing more in salary. Yet on the other side of the equation. We should be self managing at this point. Requiring little to no oversight. Those years of experience also allowing for us to provide value back into the system. What is the catch then? In a world obsessed with KPIs, OKRs, and Metrics the value we deliver can be a bit hard to quantify. The sharing of stories and experiences. Helping new employees overcome challenges. The trust built. The sort of things that can only exist between employees who don't hold leadership titles. Trust, and sharing. The ability to be open and honest in ways you cannot with those who hold titles. The value in that and those who do it is priceless. For many that value is going unrecognized. It is being pushed away in favor of improved numbers and tracking. If you are older remember. You have value. Even if someone else does not see it.
