The Value of Collaboration

The Value of Collaboration

Wanting to increase your team's performance and get results faster? Exceptional teams use collaboration to tap into their team's brain power and team members’ strengths.??

Collaboration is when, instead of working independently or in isolation, your team members and stakeholders brainstorm, strategize to solve problems and create viable new options and opportunities.

The value of collaboration is that one person’s idea, when shared, sparks an idea in another team member and yet different ideas in other team members.

It’s like a snowball rolling down a hill that keeps getting bigger and bigger. Each person’s ideas are multiplied and the team is able to produce greater results than if they had worked independently.

The benefits of collaboration are numerous:

  • Increased team member engagement
  • Stronger working relationships among team members and stakeholders
  • Increased morale
  • Better decision making?
  • Quicker and higher quality problem solving?

With all those benefits, it’s a no-brainer to ensure your team is collaborating.?

When collaborating, your team is like a pit crew on a car racing team. Each team member contributes his or her best knowledge, expertise and experience to accomplish amazing results with little, if any, wasted effort.

Imagine how ineffective a racing team would be if each person on the pit crew worked in isolation, keeping their knowledge, skill and experience to themselves. The same is true for your team. They must collaborate to become an exceptional team.

Here are five simple ways to increase collaboration.

  1. Create a shared vision for team success.
  2. Build ONE team among team members and stakeholders.
  3. Allot time in meetings for team collaboration.
  4. When team members bring a problem to you to solve, ask who they’ve collaborated with to resolve the problem.
  5. Demonstrate collaboration yourself by collaboration with your peers.

Always look for opportunities to increase collaboration among your team. The more your team collaborates, the more effective (and exceptional) they will become.
