A Valuable Life Lesson

A Valuable Life Lesson

When I began my career, I vividly remember a sign above the company’s exit door which said, “Never Assume.” It was a communications firm, and the principle is vital because assumptions can lead to misunderstandings, miscommunications, and inaccurate judgments. A recent video, "Assume That I Can," featuring Madison Tevlin and commissioned by CoorDown, a leading Italian non-profit that promotes and protects the rights of people with Down syndrome, illustrates this powerfully. It showcases Madison, an actress with Down syndrome, as a courageous and exemplary leader and communicator who is effecting change.

Behind the Creation of “Assume That I Can”

The campaign draws inspiration from the profound words of Marta Sodano, a 29-year-old Italian advocate with Down syndrome, who eloquently highlighted the psychological concept of 'self-fulfilling prophecy' during the World Down Syndrome Day Conference. This concept, rooted in sociology and psychology, was first elucidated by US sociologist Robert K. Merton in 1948. It illustrates how people's assumptions and expectations shape reality to the extent that the initial prophecy, a statement or prediction about something that will happen in the future, becomes reality. Our assumptions and wilful blindness often translate into our communications, impacting our perspective, professional lives and reality daily.

Unveiling the Power of Perception

In the realm of societal change, perception holds the key to unlocking new possibilities and breaking down barriers. “Assume that I can” challenges ingrained perceptions and ignites a global inclusivity conversation.

A Champion for Change

At the heart of the campaign stands Madison Tevlin, a beacon of resilience and advocacy. Her call to action transcends prejudice and stereotypes, urging society to embrace inclusivity and dismantle preconceived barriers.

In the campaign, Tevlin fearlessly confronts societal norms, engaging in activities deemed unattainable for individuals with Down syndrome. From sharing cocktails with friends to performing Shakespeare, Tevlin embodies the spirit of empowerment and possibility. Her unwavering determination inspires millions worldwide, igniting a movement of acceptance, understanding and equality.

A Global Movement

Since its launch, the Assume That I Can campaign has had millions of social media views and resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, sparking conversations and challenging perceptions. As the campaign continues to gain momentum, Madison Tevlin's voice has become an enduring symbol of hope and change. Her courageous advocacy paves the way for a more inclusive future where individuals of all abilities are treated equally, celebrated and valued.

Together, we can rewrite the prejudice narrative and create a world where everyone embraces difference and inclusivity and is empowered to thrive in complex, rapidly evolving environments. By staying open-minded, communicating clearly, and seeking diverse perspectives, we can prevent the negative consequences of assumptions and create better understanding and outcomes.
