Happy Friday, it’s great to see you back here for another edition of The Culture Junky LinkedIn Exclusive blog as we get the month of April underway. I hope things have gone well for you so far this year, and that things continue to not only go well but also continue to improve as we make our way through the year.?
We’re getting to that time of the year where the weather starts to be more consistently good and we have more time to spend outdoors with friends and family, grilling and swimming, fishing and boating, all that great stuff that comes with the warmer weather.?
Just this past weekend I was checking out my fishing rod ahead of this season to make sure that it was still in good shape and there was nothing that needed replacing before my son & I started fishing for the summer in the next few weeks. Very carefully I began by examining the handle, then the reel, the spool, every single element to this fishing rod from top to bottom.?
Fortunately, almost everything was in perfect shape except the rod guides which I thought needed replacing. Naturally, I hopped on Amazon and found the guides I wanted and placed my order.?

It was just then that it hit me, the process I just went through of examining every single piece of my fishing rod on a microscopic, dare I say almost obsessive level, is the same exact thing I do with my team and our organizational culture. Quarter by quarter we examine our culture and strategies for delivering that culture on a granular level, looking out for what looks good, and what needs improving. It’s only through that obsessive examination where we get into the nitty gritty details of things that the curtain is pulled back and the truth is revealed.?
In the case of my fishing rod, and sometimes our organizational culture too, there’s things that need to be replaced entirely, and other things that simply need a bit of fine tuning so they can work as part of the well oiled machine that produces your organizational culture.?
As I sit here and type this, waiting for my new fishing rod guides to be delivered, I know that this process is one I’ve done countless times before, and will do countless times in the future - just like I do with my organizational culture.?
We are creatures of habit, without a doubt. The more you do this examination exercise, the more of a habit it will become and the more positive of an impact you’ll see on your organizational culture.?
So give that some thought, have a great rest of your day, get granular and examine your cultures - we’ll talk soon.
