When my family was in business (50 years, to be exact), we had guys who worked for us for over 30 years up until my grandfather sold the business. The key is respect and appreciation. Respect and appreciate the employees, and they will do the same back.?
My grandpa told me before he died a saying about ranching that applies to trucking or any business brand.?
1)? You ride for the brand. You work hard for the brand, and the brand will reward you.?
2) You respect the brand. You hold yourself accountable and represent the brand with honor and respect.
3) The brand has the say. The owner and the trail boss have the last word on something they want done. Your way, you may think, is better, but is it good for the brand? The owner and the trail boss want it done their way because that’s what works and has worked for them for many years
4) That brand. If you don’t like what the owner or trail boss does, there are other brands you can work for. There are many, but if you think you will work for other brands and they are going to listen to what you say, that won’t work. Their ranch, their brand, their say.?
5) Your brand. If you don’t like how other brands are, get your own brand. Run it how you want to run it. You may succeed or may fail that’s up to you. Learn from mistakes and build on them so they don’t happen again
6) The difference in brands is the shape of the iron. All brands are pretty much run the same. No one brand is different from another other than the shape of the branding iron. Pay may be different, and the structure of how the brand is run may be different, but in the end, it’s all the same.?
Those are words from a very wise man and rancher. Never underestimate yourself or anyone else, whether an owner or a company man. They both have their faults, but they both have their glory.
