Valor in Action: Kicking Off a New Era of Veteran Support with Film, Fellowship, and Impact

The Georgia Medical Cannabis Society (GMCS) is launching its newest initiative to support veterans, the Valor in Action Outreach Program, starting with a Veterans Day celebration on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at AMC Parkway Pointe 15 in Atlanta, GA. The event, titled “Valor in Action: Honoring Veterans with Film and Fellowship,” will kick off a series of community-driven efforts aimed at providing veterans with a combination of entertainment, support, and access to essential wellness resources.

Veterans attending the event will experience a private screening of Venom: The Last Dance, an opportunity to unwind, reconnect with fellow veterans, and explore GMCS's broader mission to address the unique challenges that many veterans face post-service.

Creating a Path to Wellness for Veterans

Veterans often face a range of challenges, from PTSD, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) to more severe concerns like homelessness. Many find it difficult to transition from military to civilian life, dealing with health issues, lack of housing, and limited access to mental health resources.

The Valor in Action Outreach Program was designed to address these issues by offering mental health services, housing assistance, and legal aid through expungement clinics. GMCS also recognizes the impact that community-building activities can have on veteran wellness. Events like these foster fellowship, reducing the isolation veterans often experience, and promote positive engagement through social connection.

Stanley Atkins II (The CanniMedic), Director of Veterans Outreach at GMCS, understands these challenges on a personal level. A veteran himself, he sees this as an opportunity to create safe spaces where veterans can access care, engage in peer-led activities, and build meaningful relationships.

Fellowship and wellness go hand-in-hand,” Atkins shared. “This Veterans Day event is just the start. Valor in Action is a long-term commitment to ensuring that veterans have the support systems they need, whether it’s through mental health care, housing assistance, or even cannabis advocacy. We’re looking forward to working with other veteran organizations to help veterans find balance and wellness as they transition to civilian life.”

The Power of Community Engagement

For many veterans, medical cannabis offers a viable option for managing chronic pain and PTSD. While cannabis use provides health benefits, community involvement plays a significant role in the recovery process. Activities like movie screenings, wellness events, and group discussions are more than just leisure—they’re a way for veterans to reconnect, find purpose, and feel a part of something larger.

The Valor in Action Outreach Program plans to hold quarterly events that promote fellowship and offer veterans continued access to support services. Whether it’s through social gatherings, legal aid, or wellness initiatives, the GMCS is committed to making an impact on veteran lives, one connection at a time.
