Is Valentine's Day a genius marketing scheme?
Everyone loves love... right? But what made us appreciate love so much more on February 14th of each year?
Enough to buy your partner a dozen red roses, a box of tasty chocolates or cook their favourite meal, is Valentine's Day actually about love, or is it just a genius marketing scheme...??
What is the history of Valentine's Day?
If you're wondering where Valentine's Day originated from, here's your answer - according to Wikipedia, Valentine's Day is also called Saint Valentine's Day, this is because it originated as a Christian celebration of a martyr named Valentine.
There are a number of stories associated with Saint Valentine, one being that he restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer, and another that he performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Some people say Valentine's came around because of the "lovebirds" of early spring.
I guess we'll never know the facts and figures - but one thing's for sure, by the 18th century, England was gifting flowers and confessing their love to each other, so something obviously stuck.

Is Valentine's Day more about great marketing than true love?
We don't mean to trample all over the Valentine's Day rose petals and chocolate parade, but how much of Valentine's is actually about meaningful relationships?
Most retailers, whether it's clothing, food, stationery or anything in between, will most likely have organised some Valentine's campaign. The truth is, this will happen with most memorable holidays. Brands are capitalising upon what people want to buy - that is the nature of marketing, after all.
We do think that doesn't mean that Valentine's is strictly about marketing with no love behind it - it is a day that's used to show extra love and make your loved one feel special, while also falling into the trap of heart-shaped cookies and cute teddies. ??
What do you feel? Do you and your loved one celebrate Valentine's Day, or is every day a reason for love so you skip on the overpriced love heart-shaped cookie dough from the supermarket?
