Vague Goals Equal Vague Results

Vague Goals Equal Vague Results

Setting goals has always been the bedrock of productivity. But here's the thing, your run-of-the-mill SMART goals might be too, well, smart for your own good. In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship and small business, ambiguity is the kiss of death.

Every hour that you—and your team—spend deciphering unclear objectives is an hour lost in the pursuit of greatness.

The Problem with 'SMART' Goals

When we typically think of goal-setting, SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals often surface as the gold standard, and they're not entirely wrong.

However, here's where the road gets a little bumpy: the complexity of measuring goals becomes a barrier to their achievement. In the quest for measurability, we sometimes set benchmarks that don't align with our business's trajectory but rather seem achievable on paper.

Transparency in Ambition

  • The first word, 'Specific', tends to get muddled in business jargon or over-clarified into a laundry list of tasks rather than emerging as a clear underlying mission.
  • Measurability, the 'M', can sometimes steer your team to focus on the numbers, losing sight of essences that drive innovation.
  • Achievable brings the risk of selling our businesses short, settling for what's feasible in the short-term rather than stretching for the stars.
  • The last two, relevant and time-bound, tend to stand the test more valiantly, but even then, relevancy is in constant flux in the dynamic market.

Enter the SAT Goals

While civic exams and MBAs might still chant the SMART mantra, when it comes to unleashing the potential of business, we need a different dialect. SAT (Specific, Achievable, Time-Based) goals keep the rigor and lose the rigidity. Here's how we can reconfigure our thinking towards objectives that are razor-sharp, pragmatic, and forward-looking.

The Unfurling of Specifics

Starting with the S, specificity should not be mistaken for complexity. It is about defining what is behind your goals without drowning yourself in intricacy. Specific can't be a two-pager mission statement—it's a guiding star that everyone in your team should be able to point out in the sky. They should know when they see it without having to double-check a brief.

Making Achievable... Adventurous

Goals can spur action only when they are just out of reach, sparking growth and daring. An achievable SAT goal is a three-month project that could become the next three-year innovation if given the right push and resources. Achievable doesn't mean deliverables. It can be just a new way of working or seeing things. Don't mix it up with ROI - you might not be ready for that yet.

Time-Bound, Not Time Imprisoned

And then time-bound. SAT's time-anchored nature doesn't set the time in stone; it reflects a reasonable estimate that acknowledges the fluidity of business evolution. Expect flex. Plan for it and celebrate it. A date is a promise, not a doom.

In Conclusion: Deciphering the Future

The future of your business is a vast, uncharted territory. When the clouds of ambiguity part, what's left is a clear sky with your SAT goals shining like constellations. Entrepreneurs and small business owners, take heed.

Your goals are not just stepping stones; they're your north star, your lighthouse in the fog of business uncertainties. Clear and simple goals beget clear and simple action, and clear and simple action leads to anything but vague results.

Take Action

Making your goals less SMART and more SAT is not an overnight fix. It's a mindset shift, a cultural pivot within your organization. But with each redefined goal, you're not just tweaking your strategy; at times you're redesigning the very fabric of your business's ambition.

The key indeed is to be specific about our goals, and ideally to have a catalyst for that alchemical transformation of goals into results! Thanks for sharing ??! I made a video on the topic of goals to results - it will always stay at the forefront of our minds, never gets old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1WB1DgPuEs&t=105s What do you think about the idea of having a catalyst to move this alchemical reaction towards results: Goals -> Results?

Great read Kurt Schmidt! I really resonate with the SAT in the work I do for clients. Setting that "guiding star" and then turning that into tangible deliverables. It's so important for everyone to not only see the vision and be on the same page, but to be excited about that before the real work begins.

Great post Kurt Schmidt. It is spot on. Too often the framework loses sight of the purpose. Great reminder to keep that front and center.
