The vacant engineering seats and what they portray...

When you have 326 out of 584 engineering colleges affiliated to AKTU (erstwhile UPTU) having all seats empty, and another 134 colleges having less than 10 enrollments (basically 77% being nearly empty), it is perhaps correct for most of the media and the academia are reporting it with much gloom, but is it really a bad news?

From my view point, it is as good a news as there could be, and here's why I think so.

 - Vacant seats in engineering mean students, and their parents, have realized that engineering is not the only career option that's available to students

 - This should get more people to pursue what they really want to. Be it architecture, language, music, acting, planning, economic, analytics, etc.

- The colleges that having poor faculty and infrastructure shall shut shop, and that's for the better! We are already witnessing how engineers are struggling to find jobs.

- The engineering institutes that survive this drought shall realize how important it is to stay relevant, thereby ensuring (hopefully) that their focus is on research and industry orientation, rather than placements.

And while the above state of engineering colleges is for Uttar Pradesh alone, the scene for other engineering institutes shall perhaps be similar in the times to come.

I would love to hear what you have to say about this, so do leave a comment!

This is suppose to happen. I have seen a students who will not able to solve simple mats problem but still holding engineering degree. I don't know how they have managed to get this. Also, student and their parents don't know what is their goal and why they are studying engineering? Quality will survive only. Good for industry.

very well written...its time the students start understanding that engineering is not just about copying assignments and filling exam copies..they should have subject knowledge which they will get in better colleges.

Correctly put Zain Inhonvi situation in similar in Madhya pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra a different Gujrat too. More than 60-70% engineering seats have no takers in these states. Eventually the better Institutes which have focus towards quality, better industry institute connects and qualified facilities will survive and thrive

I do agree. From the past, the massive enrollments in engineering had led to a situation where even the IIT graduate is not able to find a job, sometimes. The situation is though worst in state govt and private colleges. It was all because of seeing engineering as the only carrier. From less enrollments, there may be a chance that engineer can get the position that he deserves to be. Engineer will become a quality resource, not the quantity.
