A V8, V10 and V12 all do battle in the same race.
As a young boy I got into formula one during the early 1990's
In 1994 all of the races were won by the three teams shown in the above photo.
All three teams had gone their own way with regard to the design of their cars.
Ferrari had traditionally built 12 cylinder engines that were the most powerful on the grid. The handling of their cars was often wayward. As an enthusiast I always thought their V12 engines sounded amazing.
Williams who went into 1994 as the dominant force used Renault's V10 engine which again sounded different to the Ferrari engine. Aerodynamically Williams still used the low nose design that was quite common in the early 90's.
Benetton had for a few years been developing their car around a raised nose and a Ford V8 engine which had a sound of its own.
What really impressed me about this era was that designers were free to experiment and develop new ideas.
Are we likely to ever see this kind of diversity again in Formula One?

8 年Back in the day eh... I was an avid follower of F1 in my yachting days based in Puerto Banus Marbella ish.. we saw many an F1 driver in the port on boats and off boats. I was extremely lucky to be in Monaco on the Aft Deck with our boss watching the Grand Prix of 1990. It was a big thing for a girl in her twenties.... Good times.

8 年F1 to a certain extent has been a team sport. Ayrton Senna often said that the first step towards winning the championship was to be in the right time at the right time.

8 年Agree - F1 is getting more boring each year and less about driver skill

8 年Hear hear Ian! F1 has (sadly) become the world's dullest sport, governed by money, technology and one man. It's no longer a contest for drivers, but simply a showcase to sell whatever brands are on the side of the cars. More often, energy drinks! Get rid of the computers, the electronic gizmos and the radios, and you might have something that represents a race series once again. Till then, I for one won't be watching any races anymore, and I dare say I'm not alone. I'll watch pro cycling instead.
