UNITING VOICES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTIONS?
On May 23, 2023, we hosted the United for Equity Community Partner Convening in Antioch, California as part of our commitment to addressing the significant challenges surrounding housing in the Bay Area.
This particular event, which marked the culmination of Affordable Housing Month, a time set aside to further elevate the need for equitable solutions, provided a platform for guest panelists to share their lived experiences, valuable insights, and proposed solutions. We’ll explore some of the key takeaways from each panel and discuss possible ways to improve the Bay Area housing crisis overall.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING INITIATIVES WORK
By Kevin Zwick, CEO, United Way Bay Area?
“Coming out of college, I got my start running a local food distribution center in the East Bay for Project Open Hand… I saw first-hand how destabilizing it was for vulnerable individuals to have their housing taken away and how it profoundly affects their health.”
For Affordable Housing Month, I wanted to take the time to focus on some of the success that we’re seeing across the Bay Area in the development of affordable housing. The funding from Measure A, Measure A1, and Measure K, among other local referendums in the Bay Area, is powering the affordable housing boom we’re seeing right now!?

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY IMPACT THROUGH COLLABORATION
In January, we continued our Regional Town Hall series, meeting the regions we serve where they are at, hosting events in the East Bay, North Bay, and Peninsula, culminating in a final event online.
These events proved to be prime opportunities to explore our evolution, as well as hear directly from the community about the issues, and solutions, that matter most to them – all with a focus on embodying the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles that are the backbone of our strategic plan. We also highlighted the pressing needs in the region and spoke about our impactful programs aimed at alleviating poverty, supporting housing justice, and empowering individuals and families.
United?Way Bay Area activates individuals, businesses, and communities to work together to address the root causes of poverty and build pathways to prosperity for all Bay Area residents.
