Recently, I found a poem that really resonated with not only my story, but also my mantra of Vision, Mindset, and Grit. It serves as a reminder that the future is ours to decide...and to take control of the controllable and set yourself up for success. With the start of a new month as well as a new fiscal quarter, I encourage you to visualize your goals, sit with them, believe that you are already accomplishing them, and take the next practical step to bring them to life.
Will You Choose to Pursue Your Success? Or Run From It?
When we think of the future, our brains react in one of two ways. We either get excited and motivated to move forward with our goals, or we become scared and nervous to see beyond what is already there. I don’t know about you, but I find that it is a lot easier to be fearful and stay in place than to move forward. But once we move past what it is that we are used to, or scared of, then we have the ability to unlock so much of our unused potential.?
While thinking of this theme, I came across a quote from John Scharr:
“The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created--created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.”
“The Future is Not a Result of Choices Among Alternative Paths Offered by the Present, But a Place That is Created.”
After we do the same things, day-by-day, it becomes easy to stick to our routine. In order to make change in your life, you have to want change. You must want change so badly that you are willing to not only leave your comfort zone, but to also create a zone of uncomfortability; and as John Scharr states, you must first change, “in the mind and will, created next in activity.” Your Mindset and Vision are what must first change. After these, Grit must be applied to all areas of your life for the implementation of these changes.?
“The Future is Not Some Place We Are Going To, But One We Are Creating.”?
Though it seems that the things that happen are completely out of our control, this isn’t the reality. We have an incredible opportunity to take our lives back into our control. By making active decisions to better our lives and reach our goals, we are ensuring a successful future for both ourselves and our network around us. You must remember that when controlling what can be controlled, we are taking charge of ourselves, and shifting our mindset to a can-do, instead of a can’t-do.??
“The Paths Are Not to be Found, But Made.”
Once we decide our Vision, that sets us up the scene for growth and success. We then are able to adopt the Mindset that we are not only worthy of this position, but that we deserve to put ourselves in a position of progress. Once we have these solidified in our mind, Grit is the necessary component to create our path of change towards success. If we spend our life making excuses of ‘why me?’ and ‘I can’t,’ we will never give ourselves the opportunity to grow into positions of excellence.?

"I Knew That Nothing and No One Could Carve Out That Path, Except For Me."
When we decide to change our outcome, we make the decision to change ourselves. For me, it would have been easy to let the decision be made for me. To let my circumstances determine that I was a person who couldn’t walk, a person who needed assistance for daily tasks, my circumstances almost ensured that I wouldn’t have control ever again. But I overcame. I knew the future I wanted, and I knew that nothing and no one could carve out that path, except for me. Everyday, I woke up and saw myself in a position to regain control of my life, and everyday I worked hard to ensure this path for myself.??
"Stop Laying in the Bed of Coincidence, and Instead, Take Control of the Things That are Thrown at You."
?Before my physical transformation, I was an average college boy. Though I was content with where I was, this contentment came from my undisturbed comfort. Well, once that comfort was disturbed, I took it as an opportunity to say “I can” rather than “I can’t.” I have since become more successful, independent, and motivated than I had ever thought possible. It is through my Vision, Mindset, and Grit that I was able to take control of what everyone declared ‘uncontrollable.’ Once you decide to move forward with your life, to stop laying in the bed of coincidence, and instead, take control of the things that are thrown at you, that is when you can truly become the success you know you can achieve.
