Using Your Super Hero[ine] Powers

Using Your Super Hero[ine] Powers

As a kid I remember reading comic books and watching programs with super heroes and wondering what it would be like to have their super powers. I’m reminded of my vivid imagination at Halloween when I see kids dressed up as Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Hulk, or one of the X Men or Women.

If you had a favorite super hero, what power did you want? If you had it, what would you do with it?

The hero’s journey, super power or not, is not just about following your bliss, although Joseph Campbell provided an excellent roadmap for identifying the path. The super powers serve as a metaphor for those inherent skills uniquely placed within us that we can use to help others, and by proxy, ourselves.

These “powers” do not need to be superhuman feats of strength or powers to defy physics. Instead, they serve a purpose to help, in some small way, enrich not only our life experience on this planet, but also the lives of others.

What might those inherent super powers be? At the intersection of what I love and what others appreciate me for, I would say inspiring others to make changes in their life for better health and wellbeing. Over the years this has included teaching yoga, pilates, and wellness; coaching others to find the courage to step into what feels better for them, not what they think they should do; and inspiring others to start over, explore, and dream.

When friends and clients need a non-judgmental sounding board to sort out their thoughts, I help them condense seemingly incongruent concepts into a coherent concept and an action plan. In my “day job” as a freelance attorney, I can take voluminous files of complex information and condense it to a concise summary. Similarly, as a coach, teacher, writer, and facilitator, I take information others share with me and help them find meaning or purpose in the circumstances of their life.

I help people recognize their power to deliberately create a life they love even in the face of uncertainty.

Uncertainty is where the magic lives, and where super heroes shine.
