And it all starts with using your inner strength. Yet, what is inner strength anyway? Basically, inner strength is having the courage, tenacity, and willpower to keep going when times are tough.

Surprisingly, inner strength doesn’t come naturally to many people. We have to build it up through practice, discipline, and positive affirmations.

Yet, once you achieve inner strength, you’ll be equipped with all kinds of productive life tools, including common sense, determination, a positive mindset, empathy, and integrity.

To help you get started, we rounded up 10 tips to boost your inner strength. Take a look.

1. Practice Being Self-Assertive

Believing in yourself comes from knowing what your values and beliefs are. Those are what you lean on in times of crisis or difficult times.

Knowing who you are and that you truly matter helps build up your sense of worth. It’s also one of the best ways to build your inner strength and boost your confidence.

2. Tell Your Inner Critic to Be Quiet

You might be surprised to know that you have the power to change your thoughts. You can approach a problem with negative self-talk that leaves you feeling weak and defeated.

Or you can try using a more positive way of looking at things. It requires a bit of deliberation on your part, but having that positive outlook is the best way to keep you motivated to keep moving forward even in a crisis.

3. Find Ways to Help

Whether it’s helping a friend pack their stuff or a total stranger at a homeless shelter, helping feels great! In fact, studies show that when you help someone, your brain releases the feel-good hormone oxytocin into your bloodstream. This hormone is connected to feelings of empathy, love, and fulfillment.

Who said being selfless doesn’t pay off? Turns out, it’s a great way to boost inner strength and build up your self-worth!

4. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

First, start by recognizing that everyone is struggling with something in their lives. Just because someone posts a perfect picture of themselves on social media doesn’t mean their lives are all rainbows and sunshine.

The only person you should ever compare yourself to is you. So at work and home, focus on your own accomplishments and be proud of how far you’ve come.

5. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Try doing something new once a week. It could be something as simple as finding a new route to work.

Then, gradually work your way up to mountain climbing, bungee jumping, or some other thing that’s totally out there. You’ll find that you become more resilient, open-minded, and far more assertive as an individual.

6. Outline Your Goals

Sure, we all have dreams and goals. But not all of them have to be planned out at this very moment. Try taking it one day at a time. Make a to-do list of all the things you need to accomplish today.

Once you know how to effectively plan and accomplish daily tasks, spread your wings a bit and outline the schedule for the upcoming week. Then, try it for a month and see how well you do.

7. Practice Mindfulness Meditation

In as little as 5–10 minutes a day, you can declutter your thoughts, reduce stress, and restore focus. One of the most accessible types of meditation to start with is mindfulness meditation .

Among its many benefits include mental clarity, objectivity, and relating to others with acceptance. It’s no surprise, then, that these qualities make up an integral part of your inner strength.

8. Acknowledge Your Fears

We’re all afraid of something, but few of us ever come to terms with our fear. The problem is that when you ignore your fears, they hold you back from reaching your true potential, and you feel stuck!

By acknowledging how you feel, you build up your inner strength and begin your journey forward.

9. Find a Hobby

Find things that calm you and make you feel at peace. Then, schedule an hour or two each week to participate in a hobby or learn a new skill.

If it brings you joy and helps boost your confidence and inner strength, then go for it!

10. Breathe

No one thinks about how we breathe. But when you’re in a state of panic or anger, breathing can be a great lifeline!

There are a few basic breathing techniques you can try to calm yourself down in high-stress situations. They’re great for reducing anxiety levels and give you a chance to think clearly before reacting.
