Using the power of three for learning this is a technique that I've used it for over 30 years.
One way I use this technique is for learning from books.
The first step is learning for enjoyment and entertainment.?
This step can be used for both fiction and nonfiction books. You read through or listen to the book at your leisure.?
You can read a paperback or hardback or read it on a pad device with Kindle reader or another reader app. The other way is to listen to the book on an app like Audible.
I like to read historical fiction, military and spy thrillers or biographies sometimes to give me a break from nonfiction books. I still learn things even when I am reading fiction.

Listening to books is easy because you can listen while you're driving, walking, exercising or commuting on the train.
I do this the next step only for nonfiction books. In this step you go back through the book reading it and highlighting or underlining things that you find important or noteworthy.?
I also find writing notes in the margins can be helpful. I will admit that sometimes I cheat a little and mark some things the first time through the book.?
It's a matter of determining what works best for you.?
The third time you go through and write down your notes in a journal or notebook.
Some people like to record voice notes and keep them that way.?There are several apps that you can do this with. I have used Evernote, Good Notes and Notability to do this.?
Personally I have found I like to handwrite my notes and keep them in a journal. That way, I can go back and look at the notes. I tend to remember the key themes better by writing them down.?
To summarize here are the 3 steps. ?
Step 1. Read or listen to the book.?
Step 2. Go through the book again and highlight or underline key phrases and things that are important to you.
Step 3.?Go back and take notes and organize those notes in a journal or notebook.?
I have used this process for over 30 years. I go back to some of these journals and I can get the key learnings from them in a very short time by skimming through them.?
One of the really powerful things about using Kindle as a reader is that you can print all your highlights. This can be a time saver if you like reading on a phone or a pad device.?
I took a speed reading course when I was in college. I still use speed reading to go through a book very quickly before I read it. I will get some retention from this.?I also use it to go back through a book after I am done to try to retain more of the material. Unfortunately you can’t use this process on Audible or on the Kindle Reader. You can however increase the speed on Audible to 1 1/4x, 1 1/2x or 2x.
Be Audacious!
